ca being the "world's melting pot" has been shattered. Israel today is surely that. And the Ul-pan class is a. microcosm of, Israel. Nationality sits side by side with other nationalities. Sometimes they clash. Usually, they get along—ciu^iosity about each other and the struggle to learn Hebrew being stronger than conflict.
The class also has its fearful ones, people unable to leave their old worlds emotionally and some justifiably afraid. They refused to talk to me when I asked them about themselves, afraid this article might- be read by hostile elements in their old countries, afraid of future troubles with money, documents, family.
HERE IS MY CLASS—a cross-section of it—with their stories as told to me.
Gabriella, a 44-yea:r-oId widow from Johaiiiiesburg, South Africa, arrived three months ago with her teenage son and step-daughter. Russet hair, fair skin, a soft, kind voice, Gabriella is determined to stay in Israel and 'make it". "This is not the first time for me. I have vivid meiriories of my life here 17 years a^ rael's independence. I lived here for two years. It began in London. My sister and I were on a European tour and were ready to return to Soutli Africa when something made me aware I was a Jew. Outside a newly-established Israeli consulate, an Israeli flag was being hoisted. A throng of Jews gathered to watch, many with tears in their eyes. All of us were moved by the reality of. a-Jewish state. I wroteto my Ifath-er. He_ replied'mimediate^y and urgedlne to go to Israel. He said he would pay the passage and wanted me to experience Israel."
"My sister and I went. Carrying our baggage in our hands, we spent the first days looking for lodgings. Then I spent weeks trying to find work.
Eventually I found a room and job. I worked in the government information office and was really in the centre of things. They were hard years as far as material things were concerned but every minute was exciting. I remember the arrival of hundreds of new immigrants each day, the black tent cities, the Magic Carpet arrivals from Yemen. ..."
Gabriella returned to South Africa, married an ardent pro-Israeli, had a son and led a comfortable life as a housewife. The death of her husband changed everything. There was no need, she felt, to remain in South Africa. She decided to return to Israel as quickly as she could.
Things have been hard the past three months, Gabriella said. "I have searched and searched for a suitable flat, I'm trying to start a secretarial business, and I go to Ulpan at night. My son is at a boarding school. He wants to be with me, but how can I, right now? I must arrange things — to provide for myself and my two children. Get things going. But I'm sticking it out here. I'm staying. My future is here, in Israel."
ITZHAK, 33, was born in Damascus, Syria, lived in Beirut, and came to Israel four months ago with his wife and four children. They live in Kiryat Shalom in an apartment given them by the Jewish Agency.
