come the bastion against domination of the Middle East and Africa by the Soviet Union," he told the assembly. . He described how, since 1967, Russia has given the Egyptians over two billion dollars in arms and how the Egyptian airforce is now twice as strong as on June 4, 1967. Egypt's artillery is now so massive along Sue^ he noted, that it is larger in concentration than any artillery concentration during World War 11.
Last year, according to the Jewish Agency chairman, .Israel spent 30 percent of its gross national product on weapons of defense against this massive Russian buildup while the U.S. is spending less than ten percent and at the peak of World War 11 spent only 20 percent of its G.N.P.
The Israeli taxpayer must pay for all of these defense means, he underscored, pointing out that Israel has extended its borrow-
ing ability to the maximum limit. Israelis themselves can pay for
no more than they are now doing through taxation. Some 250,000 Jews are living in substandard housing conditions and the country's education, welfare and health needs are growing--somehow all of these burdens must be met before they destroy the fabric
01 the home front, Mr. Pincus stressed.
He concluded, "We must take the help we need and the strength we need to carry on, from the Jews in this room and this community."
Dr. Arthur Hayes, chairman of the 1971 UJA campaign, appealed to all members of the community to respond with unprecedented giving commensurate with^rael's requirements. He called for greater personal involvement from ev- . eryone in coming forward as volunteer - canvassers so that every Jewish family in the community can be reached.
