JERUSALEM — "The Law Faculty is perhaps the finest in the world," says Allen Zysblat, a Canadian finishing his LL.M. at the Mount Scopus campus of Hebrew University of Jerusalem while simultaneously teaching law there.
"The teaching staff have rich and varied backgrounds, with some of them speaking five languages and many of them having e?q)erience of three or four legal systems," he adds.
Allen, 27, of Vancouver, who. graduated with a B. A.f rom the University of Alberta and who obtained his LL.B. from the University of 'British Columbia, also cites the growth of the law library and law faculty buildings on the Mount Scopus campus.
Access to Mount Scopus, where the University was founded in 1918, was regained in June 1967 after being cut off from 1948. The Law Faculty moved to Scopus at the end of 1969 and was soon followed by all first year science students.. "I shared in the excitement with many faculty members, of creating history by being among the first to study again on Mount Scopus study again on Mount Scopus," AJllensays.
During his three years in Israel he has been coordinating editor of the English-language journal of the Law School - The Israel Law Review - and an assistant to the director of the Institute for Legis-

lative Research and Comparative Law at the Law Faculty.
When he arrived in Israel in November 1967 with his wife, the former Linda Feldstein, also of Vancouver, "on a trial basis", his Hebrew was virtually non-existent. He attended a summer Ulpan (intensive Hebrew language course) at the University, where the most modern techniques are utilized, including a language laboratory and special university level test geared to academic courses given in Hebrew.
He says he also "made every effort to pay special attention at University lectures and to read as much as possible."
HIS DETERBflNATION AND progress led tohis accepting the post of teaching assistant. For .the past two years he has completed the six graduate courses for his LL.M. while lecturing for second year students in international'relations and institutions.
"Sometimes the Israeli law students would very politely correct my Hebrew grammar during •lectures," he reflects with a wry smile.
Allen, who hopes to complete his thesis in the beginning of 1971, is among some 4,000 overseas
students at the University, of whom more than half come from the English-speaking countries of Canada, U.S., Australia, United Kingdom and South Africa. Total enrollment now stands at 16,000 — up 1,000 from last year.
Allen has high praise for Israeli law students who, he says, cannot give as much time to their studies as he did in Canada because many of them have financial burdens, young families to support, and military reserve duties. "There is a much higher percentage of women here than in Canadian or American Law schools because there is a very strong tradition of equality here," he says. "There are p r ^ m i n e n t teipL9liS judges and lawyers in the coiuitry^ Some of the finest legal minds are women students and teaching assistants," he adds.
Allen and his wife are proud of their Sabra (Israeli-bom) son, Daniel, 11 months old. "I may go to the U.S. next summer for my Ph. D.," he says, "but we would probably like to raise our family in Israel. The social and cultural benefits here fully compensate for the minor economic sacrifice of leaving Canada."
