Volunteers from the Vancouver section of the ^Natioriai Cburicil of^^ Jewish Women recently began ay screening program to^ test four and five year old pre-school Children, in Vancouver nursery schools, for hearing disabilities.
This program represents a cooperative effort between NCJW, the Vancouver Health Department and the Western Institute fot* the Deaf. Volunteers will Fiave access to tKe /pr;ofessional staff in both agencies should the heed arise.
The Wlb is working closely with NCJW in letting up this program. Bev Ketchen, audiologist with, the ,WID, provided a one-day theoretical and practical workshop for the volunteers to insure that ^ they are familiar with the equipment and pirocedtifes to be followed in the heiaring screening testing:
Those members who participated in the workshop were: Mesdames N. Oreck; Ji Naimark, A. Lever, J.H, Quastel, D. Glazer, R. Katz, A. BeU R. .Feldman. V, It is believed that early iden-tificajipn of hearing problems in children is of prime importance if we are goiiig to be effective in the total planning for them. Children with hearing problems are often thought to be slow learn-* ers or even badly retarded.
