MORLEY KARE
MORLEY R. KARE is a native of Winnipeg, where he was born 50 years ago, son of the late Isaac and Rose Kare. Already a graduate student in science tin 1947, he became part of a igroup of young Canadians who -"decided to particpate in the establishment of the Jewish State.
Morley recalls how many plans were considered and abandoned. At one point he and Art Goldberg (see also .his story) explored the possibility of purchasing a war surplus ship and sailing into Haifa harbor. They found a ship loaded with surplus materials but there were complications.
However, negotiations for a Canadian expeditionary force, ac-

Morley served as an officer in medical laboratories in the Galil. One of the more memorable parts of his service took place in a refugee camp in Marseilles where he was caught up in the excitement and anticipation of the return of the concentration camp survivors. The ship which took him to Palestine was a converted banana boat which had the distinction of carrying to Israel many of the original Exodus ship passengers who had been forced to return to Germany but had filtered down to Marseilles for a second try.
His adopted family in Israel, the Kroeners, had a daughter in 1948, Dorit, who stayed 19 years later with Morley and his family as a student at an American college.
Today Dr. Morley Kare is professor of physiology and director of the Monell Chemical Senses Centre at the University of Pennsylvania. He and his wife, Carol have two children, Jordin and Susan.
Dr. Kare has been back to Israel several times, most recently as a lecturer at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. This fall he will participate in a science and industry forum at Eilat.
