Several times a year JWB continues to receive unsigned
anonymous Letters to the Editor. . . There is no way that such epistles will be published in this newspaper "because all letters must be signed by their writer. . . However, when a pseudonym is requested for publication, this is usually permitted — but only when the authentic writer first signs his or her own letter and makes a valid request for use of a pseudonym.
When approached for assistance for the Vancouver contingent of seven athletes preparing to compete in this summer's Maccabiah in Israel, the community should be aware: that JCF&C was asked for a grant for travel expenses for the seven competitors but does not have any extra funds for such requests above and beyond the drive conducted for needs of local beneficiaries. . . And on such short notice the Endorsation Committee could not be convened to deal officially with the request, Council reports. . . Hence, the Maccabiah Games athletes have a dil lemma and Council hopes the community will use its own judgment when approached for support for the athletes.
Don*t throw it away. Your garbage may be a treasure. work of Prof. Joseph Singer, of the department of aeronautical engineering, Technion-Israel Institute of Technology.
With research contracts from the U.S. Air Force, Prof. Singer and his associates have, for 13 years, conducted research into the buckling strength of cylindrical and conical shells, which form the outer skins of aircraft and missiles like Saturn.
In the mid 1960's they evolved a method for analyzing such structures from the standpoint of the buckling strength of their outer skins, which are reinforced, with external stiffening ribs called stringers.
NASA then adopted Prof. Singer's analytical method in designing the intermediate stages which link the first and second and second and third stages of Saturn V which launched the Apollo vehicles on their way to the moon, and now the Skylab.
Stringers provide bracing .for the thin-walled missile body to prevent it from buckling under the forces of acceleration when the rocket's engines lift the heavy, multi-stage assembly.
Prof. Singer, who is Tark Professor of Aircraft Structures, is
one of Israel's foremost aeronautical pioneers and present-day leaders.
On loan from Technion, he currently serves as senior vice-president for engineering at Israel Aircraft Industries, the country's largest single employer and the manufacturer of the Arava and Commodore jet aircraft and the Gabriel missile.
Born in Austria, Prof. Singer immigrated to Israel in 1938, served in the British Royal Air Force in World War II and then studied aeronautical engineering at Imperial College of London, graduating in 1948.
Upon completion of a master's degree at Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute in 1949, he returned to Israel to join the engineering department of the fledgling Israel Air Force and, attaining the rank of Major, became the head of the test and development section.
Prof. Singer has served as Dean of the Faculty and has been a visiting professor of aeronautics at Stanford university and California Institute of Technology. He is past president of the Israel Society of Aeronautics andAstro-mautics and a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society.

Pope Paul also told Shenouda he would consider it a "privilege" to go to Egypt in order to meet Coptic Christians there.
In a final communique the two churchmen said "We earnestly desire and look for a just solution for the Middle East crisis so that true peace with justice should prevail. ..."
The communique said Paul and Shenouda have decided to establish a joint commission to study eventual unity between their churches, which have been separated for 15 centuries.
Vatican sources said many difficulties stood in the way of a Papal visit to Egypt, but that the invitation is being considered along with many others.
The Pope has visited two Arab countries: the then-Jordanian part of Jerusalem in 1964 before crossing over to Israel, and stopped briefly in Lebanon on his way to Bombay later that year.
The Vatican has full diplomatic relations with Egypt.
Country Camp. Purpose of the program is to instill a sense of cultural identity in the teens and to expose them to the traditions, ceremonies and history of the Jews.

The same list of federal grants noted that $1,200 had been given to the Edmonton Canadian Arab Friendship Association to enable the group's folk dancing troupe to participate in inter-cultural events outside the city. The group also received a multiculturalism grant of $1,500 last fall. . .
