An Art Emporium founded in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1865 has been re-established in Richmond B.C.
Among the first Jewish settlers in Edinburgh were the Rosenheim, family who brought with them from Europe their trade of picture-framing and fine art. Through* the years the business was handed down from father to daughter and then to grandson Charles Eppel. Mr. Eppel maintained this art gallery until his arrival in Canada in 1952.
Revisiting Britain recently after 20 years absence brought a chance re-union with their fine art publisher who suggested that Mr. and Mrs. Eppel'be their exclusive agents in Canada for fine engraving.
These engravings, which represent one of the earliest forms of art reproduction, are currently having a great revival in Britain and on the Continent as art connoisseurs acknowledge this dying technique, Mr. Eppel stated.
"These hand-colored pictures, many of which are collector's items, are of excellent quality
and in limited edition," he said.
One rare collection of the complete set of 13 Cries of London dates back to 1790, and is now being shown in Richmond by Mrs. Cissie Eppel, who is introducing these works to Vancouver and Victoria art critics.
Also being shown are old English and modern prints, regarded as appropriate for every decor.
Bringing art to an appreciative public is not only a link with the past but continues a family tradition for Charles and Cissie Eppel.
