WHY SHOULD ANYONE ATTEND THE 'CABARET'?
BY LOU ZIMMERMAN Centre Executive Director
"Why should anyone attend the Cabaret?" I asked Clive Kaplan, chairman of the Centre's Drama committee which, in collaboration with the Jewish Community Fund and Council's Welcome Wagon Committee, is sponsoring this social event at the Centre this Saturday, Dec. 1, 8:30 p.m.
He looked at me as if he could not believe what he heard. How could someone who»is in the know aSk such a questjpn?
"For the entertainment — and to meet people," he snapped back.
"And what is so special about the entertainment?, I countered.
Now he became a little annoyed. "What's the matter? Claire Osipov is not a great singer? And the Or Chadash Dancers are not terrific?
"So many new residents of .Vancouver have asked what the community is doing to bring people together. This is our answer, and at a nominal admission charge they will have a wonderful evening."
Well, Clive is right of course. The entertainment will be first class, there will be some elementary folk-dance instruction for those who want it while others watch, ballroom dancing for those who enjoy it, refreshments, and socialization.
It's the biggest bargain of the year.
Or Chadash ^setperformonces
The Centre's. 17 Or Chadash Dancers, now into a rapidly filling performance schedule, have been rehearsing twice a week since September. They have reconstructed five suites from their Opportunities for Youth summer season, added two new suites to their repei-toire and plan another four in the new year.
Officials noted the group's upcoming performance schedule, ta which the community is being welcomed. Tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 1, Or Chadash will perform at the 'Cabaret' social evening at the Centre auditorium. They
will also perform at the Israel Bond Rally on Thursday Dec. 6, 8:15 p.m., at Queen Elizabeth theatre.
Or Chadash will present a full afternoon concert for the Community Music School on Sunday, Dec. 9, 2:30 p.m., at Stafford Junior-Secondary school, 20441 Grade Crescent, Langley.
The dancers continue to help their director Karen Uretsky Hering with Sunday night Israeli dancing 8-10 p.m. and Wednesday evening International dancing 8:30 - 10 p.m., both events at the Centre.
