IN 11 HOURS from a cold cloudy New York, El Al puts us down gently in a warm sun filled Israel. But within a few short hours we realize that we have come back.to an Israel we do.not know.
The subdued but warm welcome from old friends who are genuinely glad we have come to see them. . . A quiet airport, no porters, part of the noise and excitement we have previously experienced. . . Sparse traffic on the highways and row upon row of half-finished apartment buildings topped by silent cranes standing vigil.
Arriving at the King David hotel we are greeted by an empty lobby. It is Israel — because we remember the familiar places and
sights we have enjoyed many times before. Yet it is almost like a painting of a landscape without inhabitants.
Soon we are thrown into contact with people, officials of U.J.A. and hotel staff, and like chameleons we begin to take on the coloration of our surroundings. Declaring that these nations "have placed a priority on profits versus world justoce, Lack's Wholesale Distributors, Inc., of Houston took a full page ad in The Jewish Herald-Voice to announce that "Oil Blackmail Works Two Ways."
"Effective immediately," the advertisement stated, Lack's Wholesale Distributors , Inc., serving the Southwest in automotive, hardware, sporting good.s, and appliances since 1932, believe that now is the time for those who believe in freedom, justice and democracy to stand up and be counted. To that end, we are replacing foreign sources and domestically, where possible, and regardless of costs, all products made in Japan, France,
England. . ."
The advertisement saluted the stand of. the Dutch and asserted that "we will support all Dutch companies as our small way of showing our gratitude."
Meathwhile, leaders of American Jewish Congress picketed a Japan Camera Show in New York to protest Japan's submission to Arab oil blackmail.
"We are not calling for a boycott of Japanese goods," .said Jack M. Elkin, chairman of Congress' New York Metropolitan Council. "We are here to protest Japan's failure to stand fast with the U.S. in resisting pressure to fall in line with Arab policy."
The American Jewish Congress demonstrators carried, signs reading:
"Will The Proud Japanese People Surrender To Arab Blackmail?"
"Is Sadat Japan's Foreign Minister?"
"No Israeli Blood For Arab Oil."
Urging the "proud and powerful" Japanese nation not to allow its foreign policies "to be dictated by tiny desert sheikdoms," Mr. Elkin asserted: /
"In threatening to break diplomatic relations with IsrSeK Japan has sought to appease the Arab countries that supply nearly half its petroleum.
"The effect is to encourage further Arab oil blackmail against the United States and undercut the position ofour own government that America will not be blackmailed into changing its foreign policy.
"The best tactic would be the mobilization of a joont policy of resistance by the United States, Western Europe and Japan against excessive and unconscionable demands by the Arab countries," Mr. Elkin said.
The American Jewish Congress leaders said they would try to meet
