Commiinity backs Hulstein Fund for righteiius Dutch
Nine years' ago, a. group of men in Vancouver established a fund to express their gratitude to a Dutch couple who during the Nazi occupation in World War Two, took grave risks to hide Jewish people from the S.S.
These acts resulted in the husband being incarcerated in a concentration camp with resultant damage to his health from which he never fully recovered.
This was the Hulstein Fund — to assist Henry Hulstein and his wife with a monthly subsidy for the duration of his life.
Mr. Hulstein, suffering from ill-health, passed away two years' ago. The payment was continued " to his wife who had participated with him in the rescue of Jews, hiding from the Nazis.
Recently funds ran out and a letter was sent to those who had contributed to the original fund. No fewer than 55 men sent in their cheques and the amount raised ensures the continuation^ of the payments to Mrs. Hulstein for another 20 months.
Morris Saltzman, ; executive director of Canadian Jewish Congress under whose auspices the Hulstein Fund has been administered, has expressed satisfaction with the success of the campaign.
