As in the earlier conventions held here in 1924, 1948 iuid 1964 Western Canadian hospitality will be the byword. The feeling of fratemalism is commencing even now as planeloads of delegates and their families converge from Pacific coast states as far south as California and as far north as Alaska and Northwest Territories.
All planes are being met at Vancouver International airport by local convention organizers and are being welcomed with band music.
The gigantic confab is the culmination of months of work by a dedicated convention committee consisting of hundreds of persons undeiL direction of chairman Alec Jackson.
Featured speakers of international stature will include Dr. WilUam Korey, B'nai B^rith representative to the United Nations, and well known broadcast correspondent, both overseas and in the U.S., Bob Evans, former CBS news correspondent and Bureau Chief for the Soviet Union.
Mr. Evans' address Sunday night, July 14, 8 p.m. will be open to all persons in the com-
munity. The program will hi^iight as well many special events of wide local interest, including appearance of the famous Singing Degree Team to initiate the "Richard Brownstein Class" of new B.B. members in Vancouver's four lodges.
The open session Sunday evening will also honor five Vancouver lodge 668 50-year members: Meyer Brown, Aaron Kline, Saul Lechtzier, Harry Nemetz, P.P., Bernard Victor. Performing in honor of the 50-year members will be Cantor Murray Nixon and Cantor Moshe Preis.
Of further interest Sunday will be formal presentation of a trophy to the winner of the recent inaugural Ramt)am lodge Bible Contest final held last month over Cable 10 television. .
As the world's first and only traditional lodge of B'nai B'rith, Rambam is figuring prominently as well July 13 in Saturday evening's welcoming festivities. Rabbi Marvin Hier, Rabbi Wilfred Solomon, Cantor Moshe Preis and Cantor Murray Nixon will all join together for a beautiful Havdala ceremony closing the Sabbath and a program ushering
in the new week and the formal proceedings of the 111th District Grand Lodge Four Convention.
This event is also open to all interested persons in the community who wish to join in opening the B'nai B'rith convention proceedings.
Master of ceremonies at the Saturday night opener will be Murray Goldman. A reception will follow the program.
Key sessions of the convention agenda will take place all day Sunday. ADL presentation and the major address by Or. William Korey will be main features of the morning.
AZA Alumni Luncheon July 14 will be followed by caucuses and business sessions, climaxing in nomination of District officers at 4 p.m.
Sessions on Monday, July 15 will be devoted to workshops and business . sessions. Convention "Awards" luncheon that day is being hosted by the Government of British Columbia.

Escapee says Syrian Jews held captive

PARIS-The Syrian Government is holding'its country's 4,000 Jews captive so as to prevent them from emigrating to Israel, a young Jfewish girl who escaped from Syria last December with 92 other Jews told this, correspondent.
She had earlier given details of the plight of the Syrian community at a closed session of a one-day emergency meeting here of the International Conference for the Rescue of Jews in the
Middle East. Chairman of the conference was Alain Poher, president of the French Senate.
The young girl also told me fliat if the Syrian government were to agree to allow Syrian Jews to leave, 95 percent would do so, since there was no hope at all of living a Jewish life under Syrian rule.
Asked about the report of the e.«cape of 92 Jews from Syria Tvhich was published in the London Daily Telegraph last week, the
girl refused to comment. However, she did say that it had been very difficult for her companions and herself to prepare for their escape. The preparations took many months both before and after the October War, she added.
The conference was attended by 70 delegates from 30 countries. At the opening session, Mr. Poher said that he had received a letter from the Syrian Ambassador in Paris that very morning, (Continued on Page 9) See: SYRIAN JEWS
