Centre Choir faces year's suspension
Friday, September 13, 1974—THE BULLETIN—5
Dear Mr. Kaplan:
We, the undersigned have just learned that the Jewish Community Centre Choir is to be suspended for a year, after being in existence for the past 10 years. If this takes place, it will be very difficult to form another choir, which this Community really needs.
This decision was made by some members of the Centre staff. Choir members, who have given hundreds ofhoursoftheir time and effort, are still waiting to hear regarding the resumption of these rehearsals. To this day, no one at the Centre has seen fit to acquaint us of their decision.
As members of the choir since its inception, it is most disappointing to learn that we are to hang up our voices for a whole year! If anyone at the Centre disapproved of what we are doing or not doing, we should at least have been given the opportunity to rectify it.
In the first two years the Choir was organized, we won the Shield in competition with other choirs. Since then, we have represented the Jewish Community in concerts, Bond drives, at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, Folk Festivals, and at Israel's 25th Anniversary. Additionally, the choir has been on television, and made a record.
In May 1973, we were invited to come to Victoria, B.C. to help in their celebration of Israel's 25th year of Independence. We received a very warm reception, and were told they enjoyed both our Choir and the Or Chadash Dance Group, and received letters to that effect.
Vancouver's Jewish Community
is growing, and it seems reasonable that we could attract both male and female voices if more publicity were given to this Choir. We hope the Centre's decision
is not final.

"Low enthusiasm" led to Choir stopping
Dear Mr. Kaplan:
It is encouraging to note that at least a few people were concerned in the choir to take some initiative in trying to keep it alive. Unfortunately such interest has not been much in evidence during the past few years and it has been difficult to maintain even a minimum level of enthusiasm or attendance.
The visit to Victoria in 1973 was indeed a success and the choir was well-received but it should be noted that when I wrote to Victoria asking that the invitation be repeated in 1974 the response was negative. My efforts to receive invitations for the choir to perform outside the city have been unproductive and this is one of the reasons (there are others) for a lack of enthusiasm.
The fact of the matter is that while the choir achieved honors in its early years these have not been repeated since and the past year has been a dismal one both in terms of rehearsal attendance and in number of performances given.
The choir is not a Centre membership activity and most of the choir members do not belong to the Centre. It has represented a burden both on the finances of the Centre and on accommodation
in the building but is one which the Centre has gladly borne so long as the choir functioned well and made a significant contribution to the cultural life of the Jewish Community.
The door is never permanently closed, and the Centre Program committee is always ready to consider program suggestions. Perhaps a spirited group of singers can convince the committee that, perhaps in a new form, the choir can be re-activated.
The decision to drop the choir for this year was made, not only by staff, but also with the concurrence of the chairman of the Program committee.
