Schara Tzedecic elects officers
SAMUEL KAPLAN . . . elected president
Congregation Schara Tzedeck has announced the election of Samuel Kaplan as president and Alec Jackson as first vice-president of the synagogue. Officers were elected at the annual meeting and installation will take place later this month at the Family Purim Seudah.

Lion's Gate hosts Brotherhood Diimer
Lion's Gate lodge B'nai B'rith will host the ninth Brotherhood Interfaith Dinner, to be held on Tuesday evenibgFeb.«18 at Schara Tzedeck synagogue.

Among the many dignitaries attending will be representatives of all levels of government, and the honorable Walter Owen, Q.C., Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia. Keynote speaker will be Dr. Richard Jones, founder and president of Canadian Council for Christians and Jews. _
Entertainment will be provided by Lion's Gate lodge brothers Cantor Murray Nixon, and Jack Shapiro.

The newly elected president of Schara Tzedeck is immediate past president of the Canadian Zionist Federation, Pacific Region, which he s_erved for two consecutive terms. Mr. Kaplan is a national CZF officer and chairman of the national committee for the new CZI^ department of Information. He is a past chairman of Van^ couver State of Israel Bonds, 1967, and has been publisher and editor of The Jewish Western Bulletin since 1960.
Two Israeli scholars and a journalist — all with outstanding credentials — will provide an up-to-date analysis of "Israel Today" this Wednesday evening Feb. 5.
Prof. Haim Shaked, Prof. Amos Shapira and Gavriel Strasman will discuss the topic at the program, 8 p.m. in the Jewish Community Centre auditorium.
The evening commences a four-week course, "Israel's Today and Its Tomorrows," isponsored jointly by the Canadian Zionist Federation, Pacific region, Vancouver Hadassah Wizo, and the JCC.
Spokesmen are welcoming the entire community to attend. Tickets will be available at the 'door, but pre-registration is being stressed and may be arranged by calling the Hadassah office at 261-2620.
Serving as program chairman is Harold Orloff, regional CZF treasurer, and national board member of the Zionist Organization of Canada.
Prof. Haim Shaked is currently dean in the faculty of humanities, University of Tel Aviv. Born in that city in' 1939 he holds a B.A. and M.A. from Hebrew university and PhD from London university. He was visiting professor at Carleton university in Ottawa in 1974. . Co-editor of Middle East Record, he has published extensively in Hebrew and English on modern Middle East history.
Prof. Amos Shapira, currently engaged in counselling, law reform and legislation projects, is visiting senior fellow and lecturer at Yale university law school. Born in Israel in 1937 he holds law degrees from Hebrew university, a masters in law from Columbia, and a doctorate of law from Yale. He has taught since 1968 at Tel Aviv law school, has contributed to media discussions on the law, and has received numerous awards from major institutions. °
Gavriel Strasman, born in Poland in 1931, is currently director of the Zionist Information Centre of the Canadian Zionist Federation. He holds B.A. and M. Jur. degrees from Hebrew university. He served on the staff of "Maariv" since 1953, first as a reporter in Jerusalem, and later in Cyprus, and in London. Most recently he was the paper's chief-of-correspondents and assistant news editor.

INFORMATION SERVICE ACQUIRES NEW OFFICES
The Jewish Community Information Service and Volunteer Bureau has recently been given additional new office space in the Jewish Community Centre, thus providing a more relaxed atmosphere to those persons who drop-in requesting information on the community and Vancouver.
The Service is now resuming full-time operations after the holiday season slow-down. A new

Dr. M. B. Walters, a specialist in heart disease, will be guest speaker at the next general meet-. Lng of Lion's Gate lodge B'nai B'rith, slated for this Monday, Feb. 3, 8:30 p.m., in the Centre.
His topic will be "Preventative Measures To Avoid Heart Disease." The meeting is open to the wives and guests of members. Refreshments will be offered.
The Jewish National Fund of Canada has announced that all proceeds of the upcoming Negev Dinner will be utilized towards JNF's Canada Park project.
Well-known community worker Moe Cohen will be honored at the Dinner, slated for Feb. 9 at Schara Tzedeck auditorium. Reservations may be made by contacting the JNF office at 266-6012.
Spokesmen stated that "Canada Park is to be an attraction with great natural appeal, symbolizing all that Keren Kayemeth Le'Israel has achieved in over seven decades of service to the Jewish homeland and the Jewish people."
Visualized as serving as "the recreational landmark for hundreds of thousands of Israelis of all ages," Canada Park will be developed on a tract of some 30,000 dunams of land located halfway between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.
The Canada Park Pavilion, designed as the focal point of activity within the Park, will house an extensive permanent exhibition area depicting life in the Provinces of Canada.

The Service has given assistance to hundreds of persons in the areas of education, daycare, cultural and social programs, books, and worship.
It continues to answer such diverse questions as where can films on Judaism be obtained, Jewish Meals-on-Wheels, Sabbath services in Kamloops, employment for a South African Cantor.
Ongoing and future projects include compiling a list of families willing to extend a few days hospitality or meals to newcomers and travellers into the city, a Booklet on Canadian Jewish Services, as well as a Volunteer Bureau to coordinate volunteer activity in the community.
