QUESTION: What are the possibilities for job retraining in Israel?
ANSWER: The Israeli Ministry -of Absorption, in cooperation with the Ministry of Labor, offers - retraining courses to those interested in permanent settlement in Israel. There are many new immigrants who are interested in changing careers. The retraining programs offers them this opportunity.
There are also those whose professions are very limited in Israel and therefore haye difficulty finding jobs there. A retraining program is an excellent means for those prepared to learn a new profession.
Most of the retraining programs require a bachelor degree although some do not. The programs last from eight months to two' years, depending on the individual progam. All retraining programs require knowledge of Hebrew. For those with no Hebrew background, a Hebrew Ulpan is given at the start of the program.
Although employment cannot be absolutely guaranteed, immigrants will have nodifficulty finding jobs provided they are willing to accept positions anywhere in the country; Jobs dealing with social and community.work are mainly in development towns.
These programs are subsidized and some tinahcial assistance is available, depending on marital and financial status. The programs which are currently available are: social work; senior community centre worker; hotel administration; data processing; banking and finance; occupational rehabilitation; occupational therapy; director of services for the aged, homes for the aged.
Details concerning eligibility, duration, location and syllabus of the programs can be obtained from an Israel Aliyah Centre representative.
