'very stuck up'
I wish to thank all my relatives and friends for the lovely flowers, gifts, cards, and good wishes received by me during my recent stay in hospital. My special thanks and appreciation to Dr. Herstein, Dr. Newstone, Cantor Preis, Reverend Shuster and Congregation Beth Israel.

The Jewish Community o^ Vancouver, by and large, is "stuck up".
This is the opinion that some younger members of the Jewish community have expressed to me. They are all alarmed at the apathy of the community-at-large, of the high rate of mixed dating, and the complete lack of any activity that could bring young members of the community together at' one tune.
My opinions on apathy are known and I won't reiterate them ^ at this time. I am, however,' alarmed at the high rate of mixed dating, not for religious reasons, but because I feel ttiat the identity of being Jewish will eventually be bst forever through mass in-

termarriage and assimilation.
I am also alarmed by the almost complete absence of any activity which brings Jewish youth of both sexes together.
But what alarms me most is the over-all opinion of the Jewish community in Vancouver. It is a conmiunity that is very "stuck up".
Vancouver's community: the one that's so generous to all the great Jewish causes, but which keeps its doors firmly closed to "interlopers" — read those who don't have money or status.
Vancouver's community: a tight and highly elitist community that doesn't like strangers.
I d(»i't know what makes this community a cut above any other community, what makes this community so elitist, what makes tills community so great.
Vancouver Jews, put simply, are snobs. They stick their noses in the air and declare 'I'm Jewish".
Bigdeal! So am I. But I separate pride from social snobbery.
I've met several "machers" (big shots), and none of them have impressed me that greatly, which is probably why this Jewish community upsets me so much: it's highly unpressed with itself.
Perhaps we should be less impressed and more concerned about being Jewish.
Snobbery has, for a long time, been equated with being Jewish but the truth of the matter is that the two really don't mix.
But equating the two will not stop unless we stop it ourselves. And it is high time that we did just that.
We have an act to clean up and I suggest that we start right now.
