Hear and there — Prelude to the fall season is announcement this week that one of our real good citizens Abe Gray is heading the Israel Bond campaign for his second term. . . K you'll be in Winnipeg August 14-20, you can take in the Vancouver Canada Israel Committee Exhibit which will be on display at the YMHA during Winnipeg's city-wide Ethnic Festival. The exhibit is similar to our CIC's Habitat display last year. . . B*nai B'rith Family Picnic is slated Aug. 21 this year at Maple Grove Park... Mark Viminitz, localite who has been taking part in the Maccabiah in Israel this month, will also be participating in the Canada Games. Prior to his departure for Israel, Mark won the B.C. championships in both the 100 and 200 metre breaststroke... Folkfest Day held last month at the Centre was the brainchild of youthful Shari B.B.W. which helped the Centre co-ordinate the project. It is now expected to become an annual community event.. . We hear that Harry Kositsky won the recent raffle in support of Lubavitch-Vancouver — a trip for two to Israel.

August will be the month of the Rabbis in Vancouver... The Rabbi WUfred Solomons will be returning to Beth Israel after Sabbatical in Israel. . .Temple Sholom's new Rabbi Richard Messing arrives early August as does Rabbi Daniel Siegel, first fulltime Hillel director at UBC and whom we hear will also be conducting services for Beth Tikvah Richmond congregation... And about mid-August Rabbi Baruch Zaichyk and family will arrive. Rabbi Zaichyk is the new spiritual leader of Schara Tzedeck synagogue.
% All Vancouverites rejoiced in the recent birth of the first surviving beluga whale born in captivity. . . But there was even a Jewish angle to the birth... City obstetrician Dr. Vera Frinton [Mrs. Brian Davis in private life) was called in during the birth which we understand was very fascinating. Dr. Frinton had dropped by throughout Kavna's pregnancy. . . Some in the community will remember hearing Dr. Frinton during one of last season's Sunday Nights at Schara Tzedeck series when she spoke: about the birds, the bees and the. Bible.
