ECCA GOLDBERG PASSES AT 82
Mrs. Rebecca Goldberg, a resident of Vancouver for 50 years, passed away on Oct. 27 at Vancouver General hospital following a lengthy iUness. She was 82 years of age.
Born in Poland, Mrs. Goldberg came directly to Vancouver in 1927 from Antopol, Grodno Gubemia, Poland. She was affiliated in Vancouver with Pioneer Wom^ and Congregation Schara Tzedeck. She was one of the founders of Max Goldberg Plumbing Supply Ltd.
Mrs. Goldberg was predeceased on Sept. 2, 1975 by her husband. Max Goldberg, a pioneer resident (rf the Vancouver Jewish community. She is survived by two sons, Myer and Harry Goldberg; a sister, Mrs. Bessie Glasner; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Oct. 28 at Schara Tz^eck chapel with Rabbi B. Zaichyk and Cantor M. Preis officiating. Interment followed at Schara Tzedeck cemetery. Chevra Kadisha was in charge of arrangements.
Unexpected Suez finds
LONDON — Unexpected archaeological finds on the banks of the Suez canal testifying to a Jewish presence there 2,000 years ago were described in a lecture by Dr. Eliezer Oren, at a meeting of the Anglo-Israel Archaeological society.

Two key Rio leoders die
RIO DE .lANEIRO — Francisco Silbert, a member of Rio *s State Assembly for three terms, has died hereat'58. He was born in Rio, the son of Jewish immigrants from Poland. Silbert, who served once as president of the Assembly, was a strong supporter of Israel and the cause of Soviet Jewry in the legislature.
Col. Julio Half in, president of Hebraica club, the most important Jewish club in the city, has died in Rioat age 49. He was a dentist with the Brazilian army and a native of Rio.

ROSEL GOLDSMITH PASSEiOCT. 15
Rosel Goldsmith passed away on Oct. 15 after a sudden illness.
She was born in Vienna, Auistria on June 10, 1903, the daughter of Sephardic Jews. Her father was the Cantor of the Turkish Temple in Vienna.
Rosel Goldsmith commenced a career as a singer at the age of 17 and became one of German's top radio singing stars. She also sang in li^t operas in both Germany and Vienna.
Her first husband was interned in a concentration camp but she was able to get hun released and they escaped to Shanghai where she was widowed and interned during the Japanese invasion. Her father and one sister died in the Mocaust.
She came to Vancouver in 1950 where she met and married Emmanuel Goldsmith.
During her life here she gave numerous concerts for the G<dden Age Club, and numerous other organizations.
She is survived by a sister, EUa, and Allan and Danny Goldsmith, the two sons of her late husband.
Funeral services were held on Oct. 17 at Schara Tzedeck chapel with Rabbi B. Zaichyk and Cantor M. Preis officiating. Interment followed at Schara Tzedeck cemetery. Chevra Kadisha was in. charge of arrangements.

WASHINGTON — Jose Ber Gelbard, who emigrated to Argentina from Poland when he was nine years old and became a Minister of Economy after a successful industrial career, died at George Washington university hospital after a heart attack. He . was 60 years old.
Friends said that anti-Semitism in Argentina that reached out to family members there contributed to his ailment.
Novelist Hans Habe dies at 66
GENEVA — Funeral services were recently held in Ascona, Switzerland, for Hans Habe, a leading European novelist and editor and an early foe of the Nazis v/ho died in Locarno at the age of 66.
He was the author of more than two dozen novels, several of which were among the first to be burned the Nazis. He was also a close friend of Israel which awarded him the Herzl Prize. He visited that country a number of times and was a governor of Haifa university.
NOTED ISRAEL COMPOSER DIES
. TRL .WIV—Daniel Sambursky, a composer of numerous Israeli songs, died here at the age of 68. One of his best known works was "Shir Ha*amek" (Song of the Vallev) which was included in the film "Exodus."
Born in Koenigsberg, Germany,. he came to Israel.in 1933. He had previously studied at the music conservatory in Danzig and at the ITniversity of Berlin, He was a music teacher at the Teachers Seminary here.
'Bei Mir Bisf du Schoen' epniposer dies in N.Y.
NEW YORK — Funeral services were held for Jacob Jacobs, a major figure in the Yiddish theatre who died here at the age of 86.
He acted in and produced hundreds of musicals and wrote lyrics for countless songs. His biggest hit song, 'Bei Mir Bist du Schoen,' which he wrote with Sholom 5ecunda.in..,1931> became wtfrld

LONDON — Jews from several Soviet cities were prevented from reciting Kaddish and laying wreaths at Babi Yar to mark the thirty-sixth ariniversary of the massacre of more than 33,000 Ukrainian Jews in this ravine near Kiev by the Nazis.
Soviet authorities rejected the request of Kiev Jews to hold a religious service on the day that Dr.' Donald Coggan, the Ar? chbBhop of Cantbury, who was on a twelve-day tour of the Soviet Union, visited the site. In Moscow, Vladimir Slepak and five other Jewish refuseniks were seized by police outside their homes as they werelea ving for the railway station to travel to Kiev.
JERUSALEM — Zvi Yaron (Singer), well-known writer and broadcaster and former spokesman of the Jewish Agency and World Zionist Organization, died suddenly here at the age of 54. He suffered a heart attack in the course of a radio broadcast.
