Beth Tikvah Congregation and Centre Association has announced commencement of a city-v/ide capital funds campaign. The drive, a Jewish Community Fund and Council endorsed appeal, has as its goal the reduction of the Congregation's capital debt.
Spokesmen issued the following backgrpund information oii the Congregation:
Bieth Tikvah, formerly Richmond-Delta Jewish Community Association^ was formed in 1970 by a group of concerned young parents seeking to provide a Jewish background and education for their children:
In 1973 the Association purchased 2.3 acres of land on Geal Road and Williams in Richmond; By 1976 this land was paid for through Congregation fund raising activities.
In January 1977, the Association elected to become a Congregation affiliated with United Synagogue of America. At the same time a contract \yas let to erect a synagogue and centre. This building was opened in time for High Holidays in 1977.
The Beth Tikvah Pre-Schpol has approximately 50 children enrolled and the Hebrew School has some 60 children from level one through to. Bar-Mitzvah and Bat-Mitzvah classes. In 1978 there were two Bar-Mitzvahsand two Bat-Mitzvahs at the synagogue.
Currently, the Beth Tikvah board of directors has authorized a Search and Selection committee to actively seek the services of a full-time Rabbi. In the meantime, Shabbat-services are beiiig held with members of the
Camp Miriam board of directors have announced the appointment of Ken Levitt as chairman of the camp board.
Mr. Levitt served as director of the Summer Day Camp, at the Jewish Community Centre for three years.
"We have j ust completed our^Oth and best-ever camping season and plans are already underway for the 1979 season. Camp Miriam offers an butstahding educational program involving historical and contemporary Jewry, combined with recreation and social activities. Dietary laws are enforced.
"The program is geared to boys and girls aged 9 to 16 and is available to all children regardless of financial circumstances. We look forward to continued support from the Jewish community, particularly from the greater Vancouver area."
Mr. Levitt replaces Susan Aizen-man, who has -Served as. camp chairperson for the past six years. Ms^vAizenman^was pmised blithe committee for her "dedication to Camp Miriam and helping to develop it into one of the finest Jewish camps in Canada.'*

In its dual role as a Centre, Beth Tikvah also conducts adult social, adult education and youth activities programs for Jewish families in Richmond.
Currently membership is approximately 120 families. The majority oif these families have young children and the enrollments in the schools are expected to continue to increase.
Beth Tikvah president Morris Harowitz stated: Through a reduction in capital debt (i.e. the building mortgage) Beth Tikvah will be in a position to further expand the scope of its religious, educational and social programining. The growth and strenghthening of the Jewish coinihunity in Richmond in all its facets is Beth Tikvah's goal as an essential link in the chain of Jewish tradition and history.^
Campaign chairmen stated that persons wishing to participate in the cpntinuing growth of Richmond's-Jewish community, may forward tax deductible cohtributiohs to Beth Tikvah Building Fund, P.O. Box 94374, Richmond, B.C. Israei Bonds are also being accepted. .

Music program for pre-^schoolers at JCe
Larry Katz, Jewish Community Centre program director, has an- ■ nounced that the Centre iwill ber^ offering the Karl Orff music program to pre-schoolers. KEN.LEVITT
A former executive director of the Jewish'Family Services Agency, he is presently V treasurer of the Jewish Community Fund arid Counpil.
He received his masters degree in social work from UBC, served as president of the B.C. Association of Social' Workers. He is currently regional manager, Ministry of Human Resources, of the Bumaby and New Westminster area.
Mr.'Levitt is married to the former Leah 'Gofsky and they have two children who attend Camp Miriam. A founding member of Vancouver Habpnim in 1948, he was one of Camp Kfiriani's origjinal campers. / Mr. Levitt issued the following statement:
"Camp Miriam has pledged to provide the finest in residential camping. This pledge is supported by a $300,000 building program Uriid0r chairmanship of the Hon. Angelo E: Branca. A dedicated camp comnlittee anA committed young adults are also working towards thi^ objective. '
Men's Chai drive honors Angelo Brancasin Israel
Men's Israel Chai campaign leadership report an enthusiastic response from the community to this year's appeal, which tributes the Hon. Angelo Branca for his numerous efforts on behalf of varied community causes. Proceeds of this year's drive will go to the naming of a youth centre in Ayanot, Israel in honor of Mr and MrS; Branca. :
Marianne Ross, Women's committee chairman. Stressed that the Anyanot Agricultural High' school, established in 1930, has graduated thousands of students who have gone on to became productive citizens of Israel. An example of one of these students is the newly-appointed director of Ayanot, Chagai Yehudai.
Student studies at Ayanot encompass the regular grade nine to 12 curriculum, with the addition of agricultural studies for boys and home economic studies for girls.

JOHANNESBURG - Some 6,000 Jews emigrated from South Africa in 1977 — about five percent ^ of the community, according to statistics prepared for a-national conference of the Jewish education board.!
Ivan Greenstein, the board's outgoing chairman, said that the community was an ageing one, with the lowest growth rate of any of the country's ethnic groups. ^ He stated that about l,600j)f the 6,000 Jews who left South Africa in' 1977 had settled in israei. This compared with 41S who had done so in 1975 and 585 in 1976.

Toronto pupife receive credit for Yiddish
TORONTO — Senior pupils in Greater Toronto public high schools can attend the first extra-curricular credit courses in Yiddish language and literature at the Workmen's Circle Peretz school. The courses are supervised by the Toronto community's Hebrew Academy.
The courses, for pupils in grades 9, 10 and 11, will cost $100. Students must study Yiddish for 110 hours, the minimum required by Ontario's education ministry.
The classes will occupy two hours a day, twice a week during the school year, one on Sundays and the other on a week-day after 'day school hours.
Michael Fiszmari; the^ > principal said that the ministry recognized Yiddish in 1974 as one of 27 high school diploma c^ university entrance in the province.
