YOM KIPPUR
Yom Kippur begins on the tenth of Tishrei; this^ar October 10. Whenonethinksof this holy day, it is usually mpi^iri the context of the fast rather than food. However, tradition holds that the prcrfast lunchieoii'meat m be a feast. It is not only a mitzvah (a good deed) to eat this particular meal as a contrast to the day of genuine repentance that is to come, but it is'^a mitzvah to eat specific things. One dish in particular is fish.
CiiiBliah also takes on different shapes^ round — for a full year; with a ladder on top — for prayers ascending to heaven; with wings — oil Yom Kippur people are pure like angels.
At the immediate pre-fast meal, later in the day, poultry is usually the main dish,« reminiscent of the chicken used for the kapparot ceremony (where the chicken is used as a substitute for man's sins).' Kfeplach, the triangulair-^haped dough dumplings with meat filling are eaten at thiis meal; the nieat symbolizes inflexible justice and the dough symbolizes compassion.
It is customary to break fhe Yom Kippur fast first with sweet then with salt. Sweet cakes such as those with cinnamon, nuts and raisins are for the sweet year to cpme. Dutcheat a ciiinampn coffee cake;: Sjrriaii and Egyptian Jews eat coffee take with cardamon; Yemenites eat cake with ginger.
Fish and herring to restore the body's salt lost while fasting is then eaten along with eggs and cheese dishes.
Paris honors late anti-Semitism fighter
PARIS — Paris city council, with Jacques Chirac, the mayor, presiding, has named a street in memory of Bernard Lecache, founjder president of the League Against Ariti-Seniitism and Racisnii (Lica), who died in 1968.
Lecache was president of Lica for 41 years. At the time of his death, he was editor-in-chief of the influential weekly Le Journal du> X>imanche.
