U.S. SENT "LIBERTY" SPYSHfP TO CONTROL ISRAEL IN'67 WAR
LONDON — When Israel aircraft and torpedo boats knocked out the American telecommunication ship "Liberty" not far from EI Arish, on the fourth day of the Six-Day War in 1967, the attack was described by the Israeli government as "a tragic mistake of idenification.
This explanation, accepted at the time by the U.S. Administration, is rejected by M. Anthony Pearson in a book, published recently, in which he insists that IsraePs attack on the "Liberty" was deliberate.
The book, entitled Conspiracy of Silence: The Attack on the VSS Liberty, is published . by Quartet Books.
Pearson quotes an unnamed Pentagon general as telling him^hat the
Americans feared in 1967 that if the war went badly for the Israelis, they, might send missiles even nuclear missiles — against Arab cities, which would bring direct Soviet intervention.
To prevent this, Pearson's Pentagon general allegedly said that the Americans had promised the Russians that if Israel tried thus to escalate the war they "would personally knock out all the Israeli missile sites and bomber bases and even airborne bombers."
"Liberty," accompanied by an American Polaris submarine, was charged with monitoring the war situation to that effect, though Pearson's Pentagon source admittedly does not think the Israelis knew all this.
Pearson maintains that the Israel-_ is hit the "Liberty" simply to prevent her communicating to Washington that the Israelis had successfully distorted radio messiages between Nasser and Hussein; that they had occupied Jordanian territory "in Jerusalem and the West Bank; and that^they were intent on pushing back the Syrians on the Golan Heights before agreeing to the U.N. ceasefire call
The author leaves out of account that at that stage of the Six-Daiy War those facts were already widely known to journalists in Israel — there was no need for the Israelis to view them as secrets. JCNS.
' suspected terrorists, planned operations and the latest technological advances designed to thwart sabotage missions.
Israel's detention of Sami Ismail, an American-born Palestinian recently convicted in an Israeli court of training in Libya with a Palestinian terrorst organization, followed information relayed to Israel from the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Well-jjiaced U.S. sources have disclosed that Israeli police authorities have similarly given the United States information leading to the arrest here of suspected terrorists.
They note that Israel's expertise in the field of counter-terrorism, learned painfully over the years during an ongoing battle against Palestinian terrorism, is proving "invaluable" to the United States, which has not yet faced the kind of international terrorist attacks which have been afflicting European capitals.
American officials recognize that the Onited States is not immune. "It can happen here," one official said, . explaining why the U.S. Government has lately expanded its anti-terrorist operation.
There has been a special branch of the State Department charged with combating global terrorism for three years. But only recently has it become the focal point for coordinating the entire U.S. Government's assault on international terrorism.
Its new director, Anthony Quainton, who has the rank of ambassador, says that the office is responsible for the "preparation of detailed contingency plans" and "crisis management." The department's operations centre is always on duty and can communicate at once
