Simchat Torah
October 24,1978 — TIshrel 23, 5739
ONE CAN LEARN much about the soul of a people from the things in whichit rejoices. Some nations rejoice in their power; others in military conquests. The Jews, traditionally, have rejoiced in the Law. ' ' r . '
On Simchat TorahV which means literally "the rejoicing of the Torah" the annual reading of the Five Books of Moses is completed and begun anew: This moving observance of the complete circle of Torah study, without beginning or end, syrnbolizes the Jew's eternal devotion to study and Torah.
For the Jew, the Torah means more than a collection of stories, a history 91* eyeni axpde of lays^. For the Jew, the Torah represents a way of \m.
The traditional devotion to study of Torah is basic to Jewish love of learning for its own sake. This conscious devotion to study is part of the uniqueness of Jewish life.
COOKING FOR SUCCOT
Succot, one of the four pilgrimage festivals, is the 15th-2Ist of Tishrei. starting this year October 15-21. This is folloyring by SheminiAtzeret and. Simchat Torah, the 22nd and 23rd of Tishrei, October 22nd and 23rd.;. ; /
This is the first harvest festival of .the year before the raiiiy season and winterw In addition to the etrog, the citron which has taste and smell, the lufay (which has only taste), the myrtle (which has only smell) and the willow (which has neither) there are symbols which are eaten.
The Talmud mentions nuts, pomegranates and grape clusters to decorate the.Succa — and presumably to eat as well. Teaglach (the doughy honey-nut cookies), iekach (honey cake) and strudel are all typical of the sweetness of this festival.
Yemenites often eat sheep and lamb during the; festival; Russians serve stuffed cabbage and cabbage meat borsht.. Hiingarians eat goulash (stew of meat, paprika and onions); Greeks eat moussaka and stuffed vine leaves; Jews from Arab countries eaf kibbeh (burghul-coated and fried dish with meat inside). Chaim Berman*ts book,Tfre Walled Garden, mentions elaborate weddings rings. What are the re-spohsa dealing with this question? There must be a problem regarding such rings since there could be a doubt about; the value and at a wedding one has to knowclearly the value of the ring. '
The relevant Talmudic passage is tractate Kiddushin 9a. In Talmudic times the act of betrothal was performed by the grooni giving to the bride some object of value, hot necessarily a ring. (Wedding rings
were not introduced until the Middle Ages.)
The Talmiid, after a lengthy discussion, states that if silks are given for betrothal, there is noneed for these first to^ be tissessed for their exact value i.e., it is not necessary for the exact value to be known beforehand, only the approximate value.
On the basis of this; the famous medieval authority, Rabbenu Tarn, is quoted by the Tosafists as ruUng
that objects the value of which can bp very uncertain to have to be assessed; ^ before the betrothal, which is Why, says Rabbenu Tarn, It is the practice . not to use a wedding ring with a stone or stoneSj since these may be worthless or they may indeed, be priceless. ., .
Although elaborate rings were used (some German rings had the ' shape of a house), their value could^-.be guessed approximately and, as in :;' the case of silks, this is all that was re- -quired. (Copyright JCN & FS) ^
