AID JEWS IN ARAB LANDS
The plight of Jews living in Arab lands is no less desperate than that of Soviet Jewry. Voices must be raised on their behalf, action taken, and the situation of Arab Jewry brought to world attention.
These points were stressed Jan. IS when the newly-formed local branch of the National Committee for Jews in Arab Lands held its inaugural meeting at the home of Linda and Gary Dayan.
The meeting established two main goals for immediate action: to assist Jews to leave Arab lands where they are being persecuted; and to maintain contact with them .by letters, parcels and,donations. - , ^;
Many members onhis new group are themselves refugees from Arab lands and they recounted their own experiences and gave news of their relatives who are still unable to leave for freedom.
The meeting was chaired by Gary Dayan, who had convened the group, and he reported on the activities of the national committee which operates out of Toronto. He announced that March 10 would be designated Shabbat Zachor, in memory of the four girls murdered
while ftying to escape from Syria. All Rabbis will be asked to mark this day in their synagogues.
It was felt that the Jewish community in Vancouver is not sufficiently aware: of the situation and that a determined effort should be made to present the case of the Jews from Arab lands wherever possible.
Further, the meeting felt that those Jewish refugees that have managed to escape should be offered assistance in their new country of refuge. Four families from Iran have recently settled here and it is hoped to establish a welcoming committee to assist new arrivals to Vancouver and help in their integration.
Samir Haboosheh gave a report on the situation in Iran and there was much discussion about the Jews of that country. Proposals were put forward for establishing a number of sub-committees and these will be convened at the next meeting.
The evening ended with a slide show called "Jews in Arab Lands.'*
The next meeting will be held on Feb. 15, 8 p.m. at the home of Mr. and Mrs. B. Freenian, 1997 West 35th avenue.
