50^00 sign Israel pro-abortion petition
JERUSALEM — A delegation of the Histadrut women's organization, Na'amat, handed Knesset Speaker Yitzhak Shamir a petition bearing 50,000 signatures in favor of keeping the Abortion Law in its present form.
The delegation, headed by Na'amat Secretary-General Na'ava Arad, claimed that the plan to deny abortions to women in need, under a political deal with the ultra-orthodox, was one more step toward the erosion of women's rights in Israel, under the Likud-led coalition.
Arad also said that special national service should be. set up for Orthodox women exempt from IDF service, in order to maintain equality.
Shamir, who promised to report to the House Committee on Na'am-at's appeal, assured them: "I shall see to it that yotir voice is heard."
