Chassldim squabble over buHdlng
NEW YORK — A bitter struggle bet^yeen two Chassidic sects has been resolved to the advantage of the Satmar Chassidim. The victory cost them more than $2 million.
The bone of contention was an abandoned Brooklyn school building in the Orthodox Borough Park section of Brooklyn.
For more than a year, four Chassidic groups had beeiv trying to buy the building and convert it into a large yeshiva, as has been done with other buildings bought from the city.
But public school 103, located at a choice spot on 14th avenue, became a;symbol of inter-communial rivalry. Four groups originally tried td iKjjy it; -4 the Bobov, Kamenitz, Satpjar-and Skver Chassidim — , but the struggle finally narrowed down to Satmar and Skver.
For over a'year, lawyers representing the antagonists won court delays of an auction that would have opened th^ bidding to all, driving the
price of the building well beyond its estimated $600,000 value.
Eventually, however, the auction was held, with all four groups bidding against each other and hurling abuse. In the end, though the auction became a struggle between Satmar and Skver alone. Satmar gained a pyrrhic victory with its final bid of $2,065,000. JCNS.
