Meanwhile, the national Canadian Jewish Congress office in Montreal issued a call for Canadian Jewry to sponsor 1,000 refugees this year. CJC assistant national director Stan Urman, who announced this target, urged Jewish communities across Canada to take action on behalf of the 'Boat People.'
"We are pleased with the response of Canadian Jewry," he said, "and in view of our own peoples', tragic history, we urge Jews to respond with sponsorships and support for the refugees now."
Congress has outlined four approaches which individuals can take in relation to the refugees.
The first is sponsorship of families — any group of five or more adult Canadian citizens can sponsor one family. The group would then be financially and morally responsible

for that family for one year. The Government covers the cost of transporting the family to Vancouver and provides language and job-training where necessary. All other expenses would be borne by the sponsoring group, at an estimated cost of $500 per month for a maximum of one year.
A second approach is for individuals and groups to give money for immediate relief work in Southeast Asia. Congress has given a total of $12,000 to date, $10,000 of which has been forwarded to the International Red Cross. In addition, campaigns are underway to raise funds through the Jewish community and monies may be sent to the CJC office. Tax receipts will be issued shortly thereafter.
(Another agency doing immediate work in the area is World Vision, which supplies a "ship pack" to stranded refugees of food and supplies for one week. Each pack costs $35.00."
~ A third approach is through contacts with interfaith groups in Vancouver who are urging the government in Ottawa, Victoria and Vancouver to take strenuous action to resettle as many families as possible. A "B.C. Cares" committee, working with the local offices of Congress and the Canadian Council of Christians and Jews, can be contacted at 684-3521.
Finally, national Congress is Working on a public campaign, supported by letters to the federal government, to increase the quotas set by the federal government; to use influence with other governments to accept more refugees; and to use Canadian planes and ships to bring supplies to Southeast Asia and expedite the immigration procedures for refugees.
On July 12 at a meeting at the Vancouver Jewish Community Centre, a spokesman from the Department of Immigration outlined the procedures for sponsorship. He noted that any sponsored families come in above the federal quota, now set at about 15,000 individuals.
"Immigration is doing all it can to speed the process of bringing people out," he said. "The officers are instructed to be as flexible as possible, but the numbers of people in need are staggering."
Canadian Jewish Congress in Vancouver has information on how to sponsor families. The Jewish Immigrant Aid Society has offeredt its services in expediting sponsorship procedures, and forms arc available from the local Congress office or from the local immigration office.
"We urge Vancouver Jewry to respond to the challenge. Sponsor a family, volunteer your services, help in any way possible. The need is urgent," local CJC officials stated.
The Congress office is situated at the Jewish Community Centre, 950 W. 41 St avenue; telephone 26! -8101.
Lubavitcher emissaries promote Torah education
NEW YORK — Jewish communities in Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Philippines, Australia, India, South Korea and Canada, including Vancouver, are just some of the areas being visited this summpr by young Lubavitcher emissaries.
The students carry with them TefiUin, Mezuzot and other religious articles, and disseminate the Jewish educational and reading material published by the Lubavitcher publishing house for schools, libraries and homes. The program prohibits the solicitation of funds.
As part of their mission to strengthen Torah education among all Jews, the young scholars seek to further the Mitzvah campaign inaugurated by the Lubavitcher Rebbe in which he has called upon Jews the world over to set aside time every day for serious Torah study.
Rabbi Menachem M. Schreerson has also urged that every Jewish male from age 13 don Tefillin every weekday; that every room in a Jewish home have a kosher Mezuzah properly affixed to its doorposts; that every Jewish home have a charity box in a conspicuous place for frequent contributions to a worthwhile cause; and that every home have sacred books to remind one of Torah study and prayer.
The Lubavitcher emissaries will also emphasize the importance of
observing other Mitzvot predominantly incumbent upon the Jewish woman, namely, that all Jewish women and even young girls from age three kindle the Sabbath and holiday candles; that Kashnit be maintained; and that' Taharat Hamishpacha, the Jewish laws for marital relations be objserved.
Canadian Jewish Congress revamped
TORONTO — Meeting for the first time since 1949, the national council of the Canadiaii Jewish Congress has made a number of structural and . constitutional changes in the CJC, including abolishing its own existence.
To make up for the disappearance of the national council, the CJC's national executive committee has been expanded.
In addition, the number of delegates attending the triennial plenary assembly has been considerably increased to 1,500.
Representation of the smaller communities has been weighted, in an effort to reduce the dominance of the two major Jewish centres, Toronto and Montreal. Two new regions have been established.
The Canadian Jewish Congress was founded in 1919. JCNS.
