The new Israel Luncheon Club made a promising start at its recent opening meeting when over 60 people turned up at the Centre to hear Professor Peter Oberlander, head of UBC*s Centre for Human Settlements, speak about "Israel's Settlement Policies."
Using a large wall map of Israel to illustrate his thesis, Dr. Oberlander brought his many years of professional experience in land use and regional planning to shed light on the unique and complex structure of Israel's settlement pattern.
Relating to the current Israel-Egypt peace talks and the news that morning that Israel had returned another portion of the Sinai peninsular. Professor Oberlander noted the importance of settlement patterns in defining such concepts as nationhood and statehood, The three hermeticallyrclosed borders which surrounded Israel until this year had profoundly influenced the evolvement of Israeli settlements, he pointed out.
The audience, which was a mixture of academics, veteran Zionist supporters and a number of younger people, showed much interest in Professor Oberlahder's analysis, and only the undertaking of Canadian ZiQuist Fedieration jegip|iaL EJl^si-dent Stan; korsch to wind up the luncheon-meeting by 1:30 p.m. brought the questions-and-answers tb^an end.
CZF executive-director Sara Manobla drew the attention of all present to the CZF Peace Mission to Egypt and Israel which sets out in November.
Beside providing information and insight, the Israel Luncheon Club offers, at low cost, a meal featuring Israeli delicacies.
The next meeting, scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 23, will feature New Democratic Party leader Dave Barrett reporting on his recent visit to Israel, where he was sole Canadian delegate to the Jerusalem Conference on International Terror.

REBUFF ISRAEL HOMOSEXUALS
JERUSALEM — Supported by colleagues in the United States and Europe, Israeli homosexuals and lesbians planned to plant a 3,000-tree wood in the northern Negev.
But less than 48 hours before the ceremony, the Jewish National Fund notified the Israeli organization that they had cancelled it and would return the $9,000 subscribed.
The JNF decided that it could not allow the dedicatory plaque to^tate that the donors were homosexuals.
Earlier, two kibbutzim and a Tel Aviv hotel had refused to allow the Israeli organization to stage an international conference of Jewish homosexuals and lesbians, because the rabbinate threatened to suspend the establishments' kashrut licences. The conference was then held privately.
