JULIUS BALSHINE ELECTED JNF REGIONAL PRESIDENT
incoming president of the organization.
Spokesmen stated that this announcement was highly endorsed by JNF national head office in Montreal, as expressed by Eric Exton, national president, and Bernard Bloomfield, lifetime honorary president.
Mr. Balshine*s communal involvement began many years ago when he was president of Young Judea in Calgary.
Later, in Vancouver, he was — and still is — very involved in many Zionist and community causes and organizations, including Jewish National Fund, Canadian Zionist Federation, B*nai B*rith, State of Israel Bonds, United Jewish Appeal He was also president of the Vancouver Jewish Community Centre and Congregation Beth Israel ■ " .
He visited Irael 11 times and is regarded as haying a thorough understanding of the problems and needs facing the country today. His last visit to Israel, along with his wife Shirley, was last April when they participated inth Jewish National Fund - Beth Israel Tour.
In his capacity as president, Mr. Balshine stated that he intends to boost and upgrade the activities of the organization in the region and ''lead it to yet greater achievements in these crucial.times.**.
He noted that the Jewish National Fund pr«ently faces its most ambitious task ever — establishing 33 new settlements in the Galil (including eight settlements known as *Galil-Canada* project) and 12 new settlements -in the -Negev,^ resulting from the Peace-Treaty between Israel and Egypt.
1,000 attend S.T. Bat-Torah ceremony
Over 1,000 guests attended the Schara Tzedeck Bat-Torah Ceremony on Sunday, June 1. Family and friends, gathered to rejoice with the 12 Bat-Torah celebrants: Tobi Asmoucha, Susan Fleischer, Claire Hersh, Pola Utsky, Cara Loebl, Shana Neuman, Rachel Singer, Maria Allyson Tenby, Usa Tessler, Laurie Vechter, Mira and Neetza Walters.
All celebrants are members, of Schara Tzedeck and Beth Hami-drash families.
The celebrants, under direction of Rabbi Yussie Ueber, presented a Cantata with song, which was a lesson in Jewish history, martry-dom and Torah life. The Hebrew, English and Yiddish songs added a heartwarming spirit to the service, it was noted.
Rabbi Baruch Zaichyk, in his keynote address, charged the celebrants and those assembled to 'identify with and be committed to the Jewish people and Israel, in this difHcult time for Jews world-wide.** Schara Tzedeck spokesman stated that all who attended the ceremony experienced a true Torah educational happening.

On June 15, Michael Gmnfeld, Lion*s Gate lodge B*nai B*rith*s 33rd president, and the organization*s other new executive officers were"" installed in Schara Tzedeck^na-gogue before a targe gathering of members and friends.
Mr. Gmnfeld, a B.B. member for -the past 30 years, has been active on . many lodge committees, and is well known in the conununity, serving in the Chevra Kadisha and as Gabbi of Schara Tzed^ synagogue.
In his inaugiiral address, Mr. Grunfeld pledged active B.B.

Alec Jackson reported on the recent International B.B. Conckive he attended in Paris, France, where, he noted, there is a great resurgence of B.B. activity amongst the country*s 600,0p0^Jews.
Outgoing president Harry Baker, awarded a past president's certificate, stated, ''Our first, meeting held recently in the new Haro Park Centre for Seniors operated by B.B. and the Dutch people, shows the magnitude of B*nai B*rith*s community involvement today.**
Morris Saltzman and David Harris installed the following Lion*s Gate officers for the 1980-81 term: president, M. Gmnfeld; vice-presidents, J. Sinclair, D. Herman; secretaries, J. Dragushan, B. Chodos; treasurer, S. Moss; financial secretary, M. CobUu; warden, D. fClein; guardian, D. Kushnen chaplain, H. Baker.

Distinguished Service Awards
were conferred on B. Chodos, D. Coblin, J. Dragusin, D. Klein, S. Moss, M. Lifchus and the B.B. bingo volunteers.
The highest lodge award, the Akiba Award for distinguished and outstanding service, given only three times previously, was presented to Manny Schwartz for his community service programs, particularly for the Oakridge Retarded Children School project and the B.B. annual auction which provides money to local hospitals^
A special Past President Service Award was given to' Harold .Freeman and.2S-year continuoiu membership awards were pnbsentedt by David Cheitkow to S^ Abramson, E. Bellas, J^ Fraeme, S. Globman, A. Glotman, D. Harris, M. Propp, R. Seligman.
D. Wolochow, district board member, presented Century .Fund Raising Awards to D. Herman, A. Grossman, L. Silverman, J. Sinclair.
Membership award was made by chairman George 'turner to David Klein. Clifford Murray drew for the Air Canada Membership award, with the winner being David Harris.
Chairman of the event was Harold Fxreeman. Dinner arrangements were made by Bert SmoUan. Dancing to the Max Kushnir Trio concluded the evening.
