THE OTHER DAY, my wife comes home fresh from a little window-shopping.
"Ephraim." she tells me happily. "Fve bought you sonie real Gillettes!"
Was I ever pleased! Real Gillettes. mmm! I only sobered up after a minute at the thought that I use an electric razor, and always have. Who needs a Gillette?
Before long the truth came out: the little woman had taken a stroll along Dizengoff and come upon a new display of private enterprise — a portable shop in the form of an open-and-shut suitcase on the pavement.
"Smuggled goods." she explained in a thrilled whisper. "This sailor is selling them on the quiet."
I said where was the quiet when

the stuff was being hawked in broad daylight on Dizengoff. and she said yes but the suspense, the excitement! She'd also bought some rose water with pine extract, a bar of contraband Suchard chocolate, and a keyholder-cum-compass. I told her this last item would come in particularly handy if we ever got lost in the Sahara; we'd only need to glance at the keyholder and know in which direction Tel Aviv lay.
My wife didn't talk for two days, and then she cracked.
"I know we don't need all this junk." she confessed, "but I always fall for it because I'm a sucker for sailors."
It turned out that meanwhile she'd gone on another shopping spree and laid in some supplies for a rainy day. such as five king-size bottles of deodorant spray, a dozen tubes of real Macleans toothpaste, and a pair of bamboo slippers, made in China and smuggled over to Dizengoff ^y way of Tibet.
"They're not just expensive those seamen." the little one lamented, "they're rude as hell."
LATER that afternoon I rummaged in her handbag (a new straw-and-bamboo bag) and fished out another piece of contraband — this one an Italian cigarette lighter. Both ' of us are non-smokers.
"Woman." I scolded her. "one more sailor and I'm going in for separate accounts."
The|little4<£)ne lowered her eyes in mute compliance. :|ind seemed to be of her sea$iikness for good.
Now and then I'd make a little spotcheck. and once I discovered a cake of lavender soap hidden under the pillowslips, along with ajar of cold cream smelling suspiciously of the ocean, but she explained she still had those from last time.
And then, one dark Thursday, she relapsed. She came home looking white in the face and slumped into a chair.
"I must be soft in the head." she moaned. "I bought a monkey."
She couldn't understand it herself. All these past weeks she kept strictly to the non-commercial side of Dizengoff so as to stay out of the sailormen's clutches, and now. today, one scoundrel had crossed to this side with all his seawares. and there — on the pavement — he had this little battery-powered monkey, beating a drum, made in Hongkong. Contraband — gevalt!
"I'M SORRY" she said tearfully. "I just can't resist a sailor."
I seized her by the hand and dragged her straight off to Dizengoff. The sailor was still there, suitcase and all. He looked awfully familiar to me.
"Listen." I said to him. "aren't you the guy who owns that cosmetics store on Gordon?"
"Yeah." he said, "that's me."
I looked at the little one and saw the stars drop out of her sky. The Belgian shampoo she'd already picked up slipped from her hand.
"My mother did tell me never to believe a sailor." she whispered.
Poor thing, life has been very cruel to her.

'GRACIOUS RETIREMENT LIVING FOR YOUR GOLDEN YEARS"
(Continued from Page 1) production beyond certain clearly-defined limits and at the same time limit their ability to withhold oil from the Western economies in whose survival they have a vested interest. Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates — the so-called "conservative" Arab oil regimes — need a strong U.S. and a strong Western Europe in view of the mounting Soviet threat to their own survival, not to mention the billions they have invested in the American and Western economies, and their military vulnerability.
Illusion 5 — That Soviet Union involvemehl in the peace process will guarantee a peaceful settlement and future stability.
"Soviet involvement in the Middle East Peace negotiations guarantees its failure., The Kremlin fosters turmoil and instability in the region to increase its influence with the PLC and the radical Arab regimes and Is not a partner for peace. It is a part of the Middle East problem, not part of the solution . .. "
Illusion 6 — That an overall or '^comprehensive" settlement is achievable now and must be sought now.
An overall settlement is not possible now becaus^.-jttwith thje exception of Egypt, jthere is i|p evidence that any Arab State, let alone the PLO, is ready to accept the legitimacy of Israel as a sovereign Jewish state in the Middle East and to end the thirty year Arab war of destruction by negotiating peace with Israel — once and for all. The illusory quest for a ^comprehensive' settlement ^ ... undermines the Camp David peace process that has produced the Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty
and that offers the only rational foundation for further progress toward broader agreement and a wider peace in the Middle East.
