con^m, the ChierRabbisaid: **! do not Vtew anti-Semitism here at the moment as a major threat to Jewish existence. The only fear that obviously 1 would have to express is that, should economic pressures lead to a major breakdown or collapse, then we will once again^as we have always been in history, the first to feelit."
On the question of emigration to Israel. Dr. Jakobovits described aliya as **the ultimate realization of all our nUllenial dreanis.** aiKl declared that the settlement of young Jews in Israel deserved every CQcouragement.
Asked about the possibility of dual loyalties, the Chief Rabbi rejected any idea of conflict, describing the allegiance of British Jews to Israel as '^purely spiritual.** However, he said that "Israel is my people, they are my brothers and I will identify and fight for them of whatever nationality they are. as
Britain is my country and I will owe it my political allegiance. So I see no conflict here.**
With regard to Britain's present economic difficulties. Dr. Jakobovits was asked how Anglo-Jewry was faring in the drcumstances.
"We are certainly taking our full share of some of the economic burdens. I frequently come across problems of hardship, unemployment, bankruptcies, business difficulties, and. indeed, organizational difficulties for our organizations created by the present economic pressures.
"And perhaps the fact that we have had to rough it in the past. and. faced great ordeals in maintaining our existence, enables us to maintain a sense of optimism and a faith that eventually we will prevail under the present economic burdens... as we do under other burdens of persecution and. indeed, of martydom that are part of the Jewish ordeal at the present moment.** the Chief Rabbi added.
