Donation rejected
JERUSALEM - What*s in a name? A lot according to the Israeli Ministry of Health, <which has just turned down a $500,000 donation from the Rothschild family, to finance a new 400-bed extension to Haifa*s Rothschild Hospital;
The gift, offered by the English branch of the family, was made conditional on the Israeli authorities agreeing to drop **Rothschild** from the hospitars name.
Links between the hospital and the French branch of the family were established in the early 1940s, when Baroness Ada de Rothschild provided land and a substantial cash grant to enable the then Hadassah Hospital to move to its present location.
A condition was that her family name be permanently linked with the hospital.
An approach to the French Rothschilds for funds to help pay for the new development program was rejected. However, their British cousins were more forthcoming, though they insisted on the name-
change and that the half-million dollar contribution be considered as "a final grant.**
The English Rothschilds considered that maintaining the link would **discourage** other potential donors.
