'Circus Gothic' is outstanding theatre
IF YOU CAN possibly get to the Vancouver East Cultural Centre before Nov. 1, you will be seeing a production that has literally left this writer gasping in admiration and amazement.
I am referring to Circus Gothic, written and performed by Jan Kud-elka, with music by Marsha Coffey.
The work is incredible in terms of acting, as well as artistic design. The concept is so original, the facade so deceptive, that only as one gets into the piece do we realize what the author is saying.
On the surface. Circus Gothic tells the story, quite narrative in style, of a young actor*s experience working as a clown in a third-rate travelling circus. She t^ks about the difficulties of working with equipment that continually breaks down, and of the people who have made 'circusing* their life — people who have been unable to cope with the realities of their own world and have found refuge and sanctuary in the circus.
AND JAN shows us these people. Explicitly, honestly and with enormous compassion. Almost without realizing it, we are completely drawn into the characterizations and left totally spellbound. '
Kudelka brings to us a special kind of magic and talent, rarely seen anywhere. She is not only tremendously gifted, enormously talented, .but has an insight and understanding of the human psyche that cannot
help but touch even the most insensitive.
Her capacity to move an audience is superb, and even the small group which attended a recent evening's performance did not deter her from totally capturing each of us.
Marsha Coffey, who composed the music and works on stage with Jan, compl^ents her beautifully. Her music is gentle, earthy and ribald all at once, and together, both women are an excellent team.
I Cannot reconunend this piece, more highly. Please try.and see it. It is the work of a major talent.
