Apathy drowns olim's struggle
HAIFA — Russian immigrants in about 15 absorption centres throu-. ghout the country are still on strike, with the centres shut down one at a time for a 24-hour period. They plan to go on **for as long as people in the centres are willing," or until the authorities agree to negotiate with them. Only this time, nobody cares.
Last month the Russian olim strike of absorption centres aroused public opinion. The government was widely criticized for its ineffective handling of the Russian emi-

Today, the commotion is over. The 24-hour strikes have not managed to disrupt the centres* daily routine, supporters have stopped flocking to the Abba Khoushy Centre in Kiryat Eliezer, and even politicians have Stopped declaring who should or shouldn't be allowed to speak for the immigrants.

Hungarian Jews join WJC
NEW YORK - The Hungarian Jewish community, the largest in the Soviet bloc outside the Soviet Union itself, has applied for full membership in the World Jewish Congress. A spokesman for the WJC said approval of the application is expected to be unanimous, thus making the Jewish community of Hungary the third community in a Communist country to become a full member of the WJC. The other two-are the Jewish communities of Ruman- -ia and Yugoslavia. JTA.

Soviet officials concerned about anti-Semitic tracts
LONDON — A two-year study, together with a covering letter, sent by Ruth Qkuneva to President Leonid Brezhnev of the Soviet Union, complaining of anti-Semitism in Soviet publications, "has been examined by the highest-ranking personrier in the Soviet Communist Party's central comrhit-. tee.
Qkuneva received this information from Alexander Alexandrovich Sazonov, a senior central committee official, when she was invited to meet him, after sending the material to President Brezhnev.
Qkuneva was reported to have been told by Sazonov: "We are concerned about the exaggerations in this [Soviet anti-Zionist] literature.
"We quite agree with you in the evaluation of these (authors), who wish to reconsider... or decrease the signiHcance of the role played by Jewish revolutionaries.
"We also agree with your evaluation of such authors as Begun, Yevseyev and PikuP (virulent anti-Semites whose books are regularly published in the Soviet Union).
"We have already • put such authors as Korneyev and Yemelya-nov in their places." (These authors are also known for their anti-Semitic writings, with Yemelyanov preaching Nazi-style anti-Semitism).
Sazonov was also reported as saying: "Yet, we are not always able to keep track of their trickery. These authors often manage to evade our control.** .
This is the first time that a senior central committee official has admitted that the Soviet leadership is unable to control the spread of officially published anti-Semitic literature in the Soviet Union.
In her letter |o President Brezhnev, Okuneva asked him to

study her material, entitled, "A Few Pages of Strange Analogies," concerning statements made by some present-day and past writers about the Jews.
She wrote: "For several years I, and evidently many others, have been troubled and offended by the tone and contents of certain Soviet writers* works. Which are of a supposedly anti-Zionist, but in fact, of a strongly pronounced" anti-Semitic, nature.
"Their works are full of savage hatred, not of Zionists, but of the Jews, and they do not conceal this."
A copy of Qkuneva's letter and her study, comparing anti-Semitic literature published in Czarist times (strongly condemned by Lenin) and contemporary Soviet anti-Semitic writings, reached the European Parliamentary meeting for Soviet Jewry in Paris in June.
An English transation of Mrs. Qkuneva's letter and study has now been published as a 140-page booklet, entitled "Anti-Semitic Notions; Strange Analogies," by the Hebrew University's Centre for Research and Documentation of East European. Jewry. JCNS.
