WEEKLY HALACHA: It is a mitzvah to count the Sefirat Ha*omer without
interruption until Shavuot.
The Jewish people are compared to a dove — for innocence, for fragility, for their cooing of love to (j-i. "
A certain Hungarian community sent a shylah (rabbinic question) to the brilliant Hasam Sofer about a cantor they were thinking of hiring. He had'a fine voice, kiiew how to deal with people, but he had one drawback — he wasn't overly pious and didn't have a beard.
Answered the Hasam Sofer: "In the Song of Songs: which is a love song between G-d and Israel. G-d says to us: *Let me see your visage. let me hear your voice ....' Why in that order? But to tell you — before G-d wants to hear the voice of a cantor. G-d first wants to see what he lookslike — what a^am sAoiftffK/m. what a G-d fearing person he isr
The most beautiful cantorial voice must not start from the diaphragm, or throat, but from the souL
Why are the Jewish people compared to a dove?
Say out rabbis: all biids fly with two wingS until they stop somewhere to rest. But not a dove — even when it rests on one wing, it still flies with the other. So with the Jewish people. We can never completely rest. There is no place that we can say. here we are and will stay forever. We shone in Spain for hundreds of years, and then were tossed out. We filled German universities with great scientists, and then they sent us to gas chambers. We make cities great and vibrant, and then are made to feel like outsiders.
So what do we have left? Just one little land of Israel. Finally our wanderings are over ^- we hope. But what happens? Again our rabbis teach.. the dove escapes into a cleft of a rock to evade the attacking eagle and inside the rock lurks a snake. Even in the bosom of the Holy Land there are scorpions ready to attack.
Our only sure help is from G-d.
The greatest praise that G-d gives to the Jews is the beauty of their lips — **likc a thread of scarlet is your lips ..."
Why a thread of scarlet? Because in the Temple.on Yom Kippur. the Jews would tie a thread of scarlet to the door. If they saw that it turned white, it was a sign their sins were forgiven. If it didn't, they were very ashamed — the thread revealed their true spiritual state.
The same with lips. From the words that come forth from the lips and tongue of a person, you can easily see what typi^ of Jew he is. where his thoughts lie. what his true feelings are. Words are precious. They can heal or destroy. They can make a Jew holy or disgrace him.-
May our words, our thoughts, oru prayers and hopes always be found favorable before G-d. Amen. Shabbat Shalom. Ah freilecha Yom Tov.

NEW YORK — A spokesperson for the Satmar Chassidim reported recently that Interior Minister Yosef Burg of Israel met privately with Rabbi Moshe Teitelbaum. the Satmar Rebe. at the Rebbe's home in Williamsburg, to discuss recent altercations started by Chassidic Jews protesting Saturday traffic on the Ramot Road in Jerusalem.
Satmar Chassidim in the U.S. have twice staged demonstrations at the Israeli Consulate in Manhattan to protest the arrests of Chassidim in clashes in Jerusalem and what the spokesperson called a '^brutaP tear gas attack by police on worshippers in a Satmar synagogue on March 7 in Jcnssaleni. , /
The Satmar spokesperson told the press that Burg had asked Teitelbaum to receive him to discuss the incidents arising from the violent reactions by Chassidic Jews when cars appeared on the Ramot Road which passes through the Mea Shearim section of Jerusalem.
