AWAITING arrival of guests at unique 'Banquet of the Community' mounted at Qumran by Jerusalem Plaza in conjunction with Israel Museum.
JERUSALEM — Qumran in Guests were seated on cushions in 1947 was the site of one of the most celebrated archaeological finds of modern times: the Dead Sea Scrolls.
In ancient times. Qumran was the home of the Essene sect, who lived there in a communal existence. But recently it came alive again when the Jerualem Plaza hotel welcomed the 15th meeting of the International Council of the Israel Museum to an evening of entertainment and a traditional "banquet of the community."
The Jerusalem Plaza team, led by general manager Bill Martens and executive chef Shalom Kadosh. in conjunction with the Israel Museum, planned an evening around authentic themes taken from the period of Qumran's existence.
The hotel staff dressed in costumes reproduced from descriptions and pictures of the period; tunics in special colors and sandals. As background. Bedouin sheep herders were in the area, as well as women preparing "oven bread" on hot flat stonesas they did 2.000 years ago.
with oil "ancient
style" colored glass, wooden spoons and a homespun napkin, all in styles copied from ancient sources.
The menu and program were presented to guests in-a cylinder jar printed on "parchment." All serving pieces, dishes, finger bowls, fruit baskets and wine jars were of antique design. The meal or "banquet of the community" was also based on recipes taken from ancient sources.
A guided tour of the archaeological site, with special insights and commentary opened the evening. Dafniel Pe'er of the Israel Broadcasting Authority was master of ceremonies.
Entertainment was provided by the Madrigal Singers, who performed in a style reminiscent of the eYa and the Machol Dancers, who with the participation of the guests helped to bring Qumran back to life.
Four hundred guests participated in the trip back into life 2.000 years ago.

on the subject. Mitterrand gave an evasive reply though many Jewish leaders interpreted his answer as some sort of pledge. The press reported at the time that Mitterrand had given no commitment whatsoever.
A few days after his election. France's newly appointed Minister for Foreign Affairs. Claude Cheys-son. clearly stressed that the new administration will honor all past contracts and commitments. It was probably Cheysson's declaration, later approved by Mitterrand himself, which triggered the Israeli raid. According to scientific sources. Italy. Brazil and Portugal had also helped in the construction of the reactor and its equipment.,
France's new adjninistration condemned in no uncertain terms the Israeli Air Force raid against the Iraqi nuclear reactor. Premier Pierre Mauroy said the raid was "a very grave matter which can only further increase tensions in the area. We condemn it and regret it."
The French Premier refused to say whether France would replace the destroyed equipment saying that this issue will have to be studied in the light of the new administration's wish to honor past commitments and its basic philosophy of opposing arms sales and nuclear proliferation.
Mauroy in repl> to reporters' questions, indicated that President Francois Mitterrand's visit to Israel might have to be reconsidered. When asked if the President wiii visit Israel, as he has promised. Mauroy replied, "such an important raid obviously will have unpredictable results." Mitterrand was expected to visit Israel next fall.
Mauroy also refused to say whether. France will consider sanctions agaisnt Israel. But repeated several times with increasing emphasis "we can only condemn this sort of action."
Mauroy stressed in his reply that the reactor was "exclusively a research centre" and added that the site had recently been inspected by the Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Commission.
