National Council of Jewish Women, Vancotiver Section, will hold its third annual Friends and Angels . Gala at an 'after 8 party* on Tuesday, Dec. 8 at the home of Jnidy and Dan Pekarsky, 1598 Angus Drive.
Co-conveners Ruth Buckwold and Sandy HoDenberg stated that 'Friends of Council* is a national project which enables both Council members and their friends to contribute towards NCJW programs both in Israel and the local community.
National chairman Hinda Simkin of Vancouver noted NCJW*s work in spearheading needed services for those in eadi Section area. Locally, Council co^ponsors the only hearing-assessment program for preschool children in Vancouver. Project chairman Zoe Oreck expressed hope that a sound-proof mobile audiometric screening van would be acquire shortly.
. Local NCJW projects also include sponsorship of an annual party for the Canadian National Institute for the Blind and gifts for the Mental Health society.
With the Friends and Angels invitations, the women will be receiving a special ticket for Council's annual Israel and Community Services Brunch which is being held the next day, Wednesday, Dec. 9 ' from 11 2.m. to 2 p.m. at the home of . Dr. and Mrs. Morton Beiser, 1499 Angus Drive.

Drawing upon his experience in South Africa and Ireland and his recent trip to Eastern Europe. Rosen observed that communities under difficult circumstances were the ones that maintained strong Jewish identities while those enjoying optimal conditions, particularly those in North America, were the ones with a weakened Jewish life.
"There may be a human trait of thriving in adversity, but the nurturing of internal sources of strength and cultivating of strong roots should not be dependent on whether or not external influences act as a catalyst for Jewish identity."
During his visit here. Chief Rabbi Rosen spoke to a capacity audience at a seminar of the Vancouver Young Leadership Group held on Nov. 5.
