Menorah Jewish Cofflmunity Assn. elects first state

SANDRA CRANE ... first president
The Lower Mainland's newest Jewish community association — serving residents of White Rock, Langley, Surrey, Delta and Tsaw-wassen — has officially chosen a name and elected its first executive slate.
A meeting held Sept. 11 selected the name Menorah Jewish Community Association and elected Sandra Crane as the group's first president.
Mrs. Crane said that the organization, which already has had some 70 families attend its initial programs,
chose the name Menorah because it "typifies Jewish tradition and the light of future and hope — ideals the group will strive for. The branches of the Menorah symbolize the arms of Our community reaching out to our people." ~

Menorah's previous functions were a getting-to-know-you party in June, jfamily - picnic in July, and bowling night in August; Upcomiilg events planned include a Yom Kippijr adopt-a-family program and erection of a Succa.

Aliyah Centre/Haboniin
Extensive promotion of aliyah is
to be the major priority of Yishai Knoll, new shaliach of'the Israel Aliyah Centre for the next two years.
Knoll, who recently came to Vancouver to take up his duties, told the Bulletin he is dedicated to arousing interest in work, study, travel and settlement in Israel. He stressed that thie full resources of the lAC as well as his own personal efforts, will be available to aid everyone interested in these areas.
The 37-year-old Sabra from Kibbutz Ramat Yochanan in the Zebu-Ion Valley near Haifa, will also serve as shaliach to the Habonim youth movement. He has already visited Camp Miriam and noted he looks

Knoll is here with bis wife, Varda, and childreii Atar, 14, Yehonaton, 12, and Yohel, six. The Knolls were both born and raised oh Kibbutz Ramat Yochanan, where^hey completed highschopi before, entering the Israel Defense FdtXies.
Serving as a division commander. Knoll fought in the Gaza Strip during the 167 W>ar. and on the Egyptian front in the^Y^Hn Kippur War.
Although Yishai Knpirs kibbutz work has ceptred on agriculture, his talent and interest in music prompted his kibbutz to send him to the Ruben Academy of MnsiC; in Tel Aviv,where he speht two years studying music cpmposltion. While acting as general secretary of Ramat Yochanan and advisor to various youth-programs, he found tinie to create several modem classical musical compositions, whtcb.have been recorded.
' Varda Knoll, who has a degree in literature and theatre from Tel Aviv university;, has spent eight years teaching creative drama and litera-tu^ on kibbutz schools and at the Teachers Seminary at Oranim. She hopes to beable to work liere with all age groups in the area of Jewish dramatics.
The husband-wife teatn stressed that they '♦really want to become involved in the Jewish community of British Columbia and become part ofit.".
Knoll succeeds Rami Raz, who has returned to Israel^ith his family after serving as Aliyah and Habonim shaliach here for the past three years.
