Jerusalem Ptaza hotel caters for Great New Synagogue banquet hall
JERUSALEM — The Jerusalem Plaza, a Canadian Pacific hotel, acquired this summer the most impressive banquet hall in Israel, located at the Great NewSynagogue across the street. ^
The Great New Synajgogue, which was officially opened in August, is called the world's most beautiful synagogue. It was builtin dedication to the memory of the Six Million Jews who perished under the Nazis, and to all those who have fallen in the defense of Israel. ' Requests have alrd^y been received from Jewish famifies, not only in Israel but also from overseas,' to hold their Bar-Mitzvah and wedding celebrations in the new banquet hall of the Great Synagogue.
Its interior design combines Seph-ardic and Ashkenazic styles. The diamond-shaped synagogue hall and gallery seat up to ahnost 1,000 men and 650 women, with- a massive unsupported dome rising to a height of 20 meters. The building also contains a smaller Sephardic synagogue.
The edifice is built of Jerusalem stone and Israeli, Greek and Italian marble:^ Its fumisjhings, made in Israel, are of oak, its windows of stained glassand its chandeliers of crystal/Among the unique features of the synagogue are a sunken choir pit, whu^ c^ hydraulically raised to become an elevated platform for wedding canopies; a latticed roof panel above the platform.
ceremonies may be conducted beneath the open sky; a bridal dressi^g room; and the noagntficent new banquet hall which has been leased to the Jerusalem Plaza for a period of iO years.
The agreement was signed by W.E. Martens, general manager of the Jerusalem Plaza hotel, and Dr. Maurice Jaffe of Hechal Shlomo (the seat of the (^lief Rabbinate of Israel). All functions hekl in the new banquet hall, are to be under the expertise of the Jerusalem PIaza*s food and beverage department
**The hall we have leased is some 1,452 square meters and will hold sit-down dinners for 750 persons. The foyer can acconmiodate^ cocktail party for upwards of 700 persons,** announced Martens.
**The inarble-columned haO; the polychrome floor, the wood-paneled walls, Uie etiorinOu$:^^^ chandeliers arid st»ikied-^ass^^^ w^ dows, all provide the hasis for the most impressive and elegant functions in Israel,** Martens said.
