Begin and his party are at this writing on the crest of the wavcv The Likud, moreover, have found their crown prince, in the corpulent person of the dynamic and ebullient Arik Sharon. Whatever Peres knows about defence^ Sharon would claim to know better; the detailed planning of the strategic settlenlent of the West Bank is just one symptom of his ability to get things done axactly as he wishes. An election, at this writing, would give Begin a resounding victory; many believe that one on

the day after would put the political rough-rider Sharon in undisputed control of the country.
Peresthe pragmatic and prescient, who coiild still make a major contribution to peace in the Middle East, has other problems. The deep personal rift with Rabin has never closed. The Labor Party remains, uncertain of itself. The coolness with France persists, and Peres did so much in years gone by to forge friendship with Paris. The thought remains that the cool, astute Peres is somehow "un-Israeli,** still a European Jewish exile. He is out of step in an era of flamboyance, of which Sharon is by no means a solitary symbol — witness Uri Avneri and Abie Nathan of the wildcat opposition. A pity that this book reveals little of the real workings of Peres* mind. There could haVe been lessons there, useful for Israel. JCNS.

The Garden of Eden rests on a mountain. Noah brings redemption to mankind after fmding respite on a mountain. The builders of the tower of Babel want to construct their own mountain. The same ifnagery repeats itself like a musical leitmotif in the other Biblical texts (Moses on the mountain).
The author is also the first commentator to use the riegistry of geography to make some powerful points'regarding the cyclical nature of the Pentateuch. Adam and Eve are banished to a place east of Eden; so js Gain! Abraham reverses the trajectory and the destiny of the Jewilsh people by treking westward.
THE SAME incisive and pene-''t'rati'ng (Joinmerits on Exodus are to be foijnd in this volume. Especially ihfiriguing is the interpretation of one of the most vexing passagesjn the Hebrew Bible. Exodus 4:24-26: "the^ bridegroom of blood" versed 7 Fishbane offers an explanatidifof "rthtse difficult words that is both logical and appealing. The preceding are small samples Michael Fishbane*s excellence as a Bible scholar. In the years to come^ lie^iil und oubted ly emerge as one of this continent's outstanding expositor's of Jewish literature.
