Dr.- Landes met with a group of North Shore Jewish residents on Jan. 23 at- the home of Mr. and Mrs. William Katzin, during which -he spoke of his own colorful personal life and how he became a Baal Tshuva himself. Growing up ina'^modem Orthodox^ home in Borough Park, Brooklyn, New York; he attended yeshiva with Chaim Potok, author of The Chosen, well as the two
the alarm of the Lubavitcher Rebbe over techniques of meditation; particularly Transcendental Meditation, which drew upon Eastern religious rituals. The Rebbe asked him and a few other behavioral science professionals to develop an acceptable form of meditation for Jews.
One technique demonstrated was the useofShabbat candles for visualization in a light trance. Participants were directed to look at the candles and recall Shabbat experiences that had had special meaning for them in their lives.

New family program in Israel announced
NEW YORK — A new program. Project Elef, designed to bring up to 1,000 North American families to Israel this summer, has been announced l>yMoshe Shechter, director of Israel Aliyah Centre.
Shechter stated that Project Elef has been created to give North American families a real taste of life in Israel Fatiiilies will reside in absorption centres, guest houses on kibbutzim luiid moshavim, or in special accommodations in settlement towns during their one-month stay.
Eacb famUy will have a choice of work activities and programs^ including: experiencing Icibbutz living, harvesting fruit on a moshav, living on a settfement in Judea: and Samaria, aspecial touring program, and an educational program in Jewish history and Torah study.
Visiting families will be
guided through the program by a host family in Israel, enabling participants to be integrated into Israeli life as much as possible. Families will shop where the Israelis shop, work with themi share in their pastimes and learn at their schools.
Both religious and non-religious programs are offered. Project Elef is* sponsored in Israel by- the Je^h Agency*s Inunigration ahd Absorption department.^
