Spa-ing for a good cause
Talmud Torah supporters get rubbed the right way.

What better way to raise money for a worthy cause than by relaxing in a spa, sipping wine and having a facial and manicure? That's what organizers of Vancouver Talmud Torah elementary school's first Spa Night fund-raiser thou^t and the idea more than paid off.
Sandy Fayerman, executive director of development at Talmud Torah, said the evening exceeded all financial expectations by bringing in close to $20,000 to be used for educational needs in the
41st in Vancouver two months ago and were happy to open their doors to the Jewish community.
"I have had many members of the community as clients for the last 18 years, and we were excited to be part of this evening," said Sarmcnto. Sheryl Kahn, who chaired the spa committee and is a parent at the school, said she was very pleased to see much-needed money being raised to assist school programs. The school relies on fund-raising to support its tuition assistance program, which ensures acceptance

school. She was also pleased at the evening's success as an outreach to those in the community.
"It not only succeeded as a fundraiser but also met our goal of bringing awareness to the community of the needs of the school," she said. "Over 40 per cent of ticket purchasers were non-Talmud Torah parents or staff. We are very pleased with the results."
Almost 100 tickets were sold, both for spa services for the evening or to be used later as gift, certificates. Staff members at the lavishly appointed Cabello Salon and Spa were busy accommodating more than 50 women who turned out for pampering treatments. Owners Olga Sarmento and sister Dulce Agostinho laimched the spa at Dunbar and
of students regardless of financial ability. Shortfalls from government cutbacks also make it incumbent on the school to raise money.
The next miyor fund-raising event will be the spring fair in May. Fayerman looks forward to the continuing support of the community and hopes all future events vdll be as much of a success as this one. □
