JWI-B.C. chapter project gets national recognition.
JWI-B.C. chapter delegates, left to right, Debbie Cossever, Harriet Permut, Sara Ciacci, Suzanne Borer, Isabelle Somekh, Caron Bernstein and Annette Whitehead.
More than 100 women from across Canada recently attended the 2003 Jewish Women International of Canada (JWIC) Force for Social Change Biennial Convention held at the Delta Meadowvale Resort and Conference Centre in Mis-sissauga, Ont.
JWIC-B.C. chapter delegates were chapter president Isabelle Somekh, western area vice-president Debbie Cossever, national board member Sara Ciacci, chapter secretary Harriet Permut and chapter members Caron Bernstein and Annette Whitehead.
Ruth Flicker, a well-known strategic planning consultant hired to work with members of the JWIC strategic planning committee, held a two-hour information session for participants. The committee, which includes Somekh, is working to create an organizational map that will move the organization forward with flexible membership options and programs designed to attract more members.
As well, an informative session was held with guest speakers Wendy CuJder, president of the Coalition for Gun Control, and Mau-rel Rothman, executive director of Campaign 2000, a campaign to end child poverty in Canada. JWIC is an active member of both of these coalitions.
A highlight of the convention was the presentation of national awards. The B.C. chapter received a number of honors, including the National Community Service Award for the ConnectionCard project. The double-folded, business-sized card lists names and phone numbers of Jewish women professionals, lawyers, therapists, financial planning assistants and personal safety trainers who are knowledgeable of, and willing to work with, Jewish domestic abuse victims. The card prominently displays the Jewish Family Service Agency's 24-hour DeVoRa domestic abuse phone number for Jewish victims (604-209-1622).
JWIC is committed to creating a safe and secure environment for women and children. For more information, call 604-838-5567. □

A New Year^ Eve enigma
Those looking to hook up with a New Year's Eve party that has a Jewish flavor, as well as a cross-section of the community, might want to be at Enigma restaurant Dec. 31. Organized by Dr. Michael Events (Michael Horowitz), the Enigma New Year's Eve party starts at 9:30 p.m. and runs deep into 2004, with an all-night kitchen and bar.
The $30 entry fee ($40 after Dec. 22) includes a glass of Champagne, party favors, a live DJ, open dance floor and large screen TV to see how others are spending the evening across the world. "Though Horowitz is best known for throwing singles bashes aroimd the Vancouver area (Jevdsh Love Potion, Club Shmooze), this is not a singles event. The expected age range is 25 to 45.
Enigma is owned by Lynctte and Ivan Buchman, members of the Jev^sh community who came to Vancouver from South Africa about a year and a half ago. The restaurant is located at 4397 West 10th Ave., not too far from the Varsity Theatre.
