of the synagogue - picked it up and found it filled with enough money to rescue the Jews of Hebron. From, then on the Jews of Hebron annur ally celebrated what they called Purim Tahka — "window Purim."
Another fascinating rescue is one which has come to be known as<junpowder Purim. It is linked to the Danzig family of VilnaJ One of the better^ known codifications of Jewish law which- i$ still used extensively is known as the //flr.»v//l</tfwand-Was written by Abraham Danzig.
In December 1804, the 15th of ICisIev, the city of Vilna was rocked- by tremendous explor sions when the magnesium at t he; gu n powder-factories was accidentally ignited. There was tremendous loss of Jife in particular among the Jewish community located near the gunpowder factories. Miraculously jthe members of the Dan?.ig family were saved from death. Ever since, their descendants Have observed on • tlie 15th of Kislev, their own Gunpowder Purim —^highlighted by prayers of thanksgiving and_the lighting of fireworks. . / ; .

An annual Purim marked in Tunisia has its roots in the natural elements. In January 1891, a.; isiintling snowstorip wasraging in Tunis and many died from the,co'id and other laclcof facilities Because of the weather. One - of the synagogues ill the.city became a distribution centre;''Cpr^food and .for providing shelter for those whose home's had.been destroyed,
' With each passing day the
' weather got worse and then finally thC snow ceased. The
^ people^began to returnV6 tHeir homes. The night'after the
^synagogue was cleared, the, roof fell in from all the snow but fortunately no one was
' hurt. The Jews of Tunis annually observe on the 24th of Tevet a PurimSheiegi a Snow Purim, to mark their rescue.
A recent Purim was instituted by the~Frimer family in the United States. Some years ago the B*nai BVith building in Washington D.C. was taken over bya radicalgroup and for several days many of the people working in the building were under siege by the gunmen.
One of those caught Jn the building was Rabbi Norman Frimer, then national director of Hillel. When, after several harrowing days, he was finally released unharmed by his capr tors, he decided to mark the event by a special Purim for his family. Ever since the Primer family annually gets together to mark Rabbi Fri-mer's deliverance.
Tens of other 'special Purims* are recorded-in the annals of our people. They vindicate how the Purim festir vai is deeply rooted in the historical consciousness of communities widely separated in place and time, but united in their sense of historical appreciation.
Before he left for Israel, I Rosenbaum arranged codes with Goldstein. Black ink was to be used for letters that were true, and redj
ink for false _
information, to make a:goo( impression on the censor.
Rosenbaum arrives in Haifa, and soon receives his first letter from Goldstein; who's still in the USSR. It's in ^black ink, so it must be true;^ But as he starts reading, his face grows long with disbelief.
"We are raising the banner of Marxism-^Leninism higher yet, and living the rich life of citizens of our beloved people's democracy. Our standard of liyirig has gone up beyond all bounds
And so it goes on until the end of the letter: **There's but a single shadow on my bliss. You can't get a bottle of red ink for love or money!"
