RUBEN GAJER stands with KIs ^ffe, Tzlpr-Faye, lat the base of the south tower off the Annacis Island tirldge, currently under construction, in the background Is th^>orth tower.
while studying for his Masters degree in structural engineering at UBC. He said'that as he began keeping more and more mitzvot: (e.g; putting on tefil-lin) and attending classes and events at the Lubavitch centre
^ regularly, he became increasingly/rwrn (observant).
'*When yoii become a fiorfl/ >;7(?s/iMva (a person that comes batk to the ways of the Torah)
'/youriealize the values of ^VitJ-dishkeit," he said. Forhim it has now iBecom'e a natural way of life.
'^People who see me in public in a A:i/>/7a and with my beard probably think! am living in the past/'said Gajer.
'*They probably do not realize that you can live a Torah life and a modem life at the same time," he added, referring to the fact that he can and does operate a computer, drive a modern car, solve coniplex differential equations, and studies Gemorra and Chassidut.
He reminded that the Gemorra contains plenty of
/math.
A quiet-spoken man in his early 30s, Gajer finds no contradiction between his life;' style and his chpsen profes-sion. ■
He has worked for the same company foi; four ytos. Each

The bridge is a cable-stayed structure, scheduled forcom«-" pfetlon in June 1986. ^ When completed it will be-the longest cable-stayed bridge in the world, said Gajer. Mainspan between^hc; two towers is 465 metres.
Gajer has been involved in analysis and design of^the bridge, as well as the erection engineering.
Some of his duties include ' study of the effects of traffic' patterns,., wind, earthquakes and weather on the "finar* bridge as well as at different stages of construction.
"At every stage of erection, the bridge is a new structure . and it requires new .analysis and planning,'' he explained..
