Our sages tell iis that tested Avraham ten. times. The final and most difficuh test was the Akeidah, the binding of Yitzchok upon the ' altar.
This is related-.at length in the Torah portion of Vayeirah which recounts how G-d said to Avraham, "Please take your son, yow Only son; whoniyou love, Yitzchok... and offer him as a burnt' offering, i .** ■
The Gemara explains why G-d pleaded with Avraham to offer his son and did not simply command him to do so. G-d was, in effect, saying to Avraham: have tested you oil numerous occasions and you have successfully passed all the trials. Please withstand this test as well, so that it not be saul: The earlier tests were meaningless'."
The Gemara's explanation needs to be understood. Even if Avraham's self-sacrifice would not haye been strong enough to withstand the final test, in no way would this have negated his ability in withstanding the previous ones,, since the last test was far and away the most difficult of all.
Why, then, would it be said that "the earlier tests were meaningless?**
The portion of the A keidah is deemed so important that it takes a prominent place in our daily prayers.
Why do we constantly recall this event, which ended with Avraham and Yitzchok receiving a last-minute reprieve, when the whole course of Jewish history is one long, unbroken chain of Jewish martyrs who actually gave their lives for the sanctifica-tion of G-d*s name? Moreover, they willingly faced martyrdom without having first received a direct communication from G-d!
Chassidus explains that Avraham was unique in that he was the first individual to withstand the test of mesirus nefesh, total sacrifice of self for the sake of G-d.
He did so notwithstanding the fact that "AH beginnings are difficult.**
Once he broke ihe"mesirus nefesh barrier** it became much easier for those who came after him to follow in his footsteps and reveal within themselves the power of mesi-rus nefesh as well.
Attaining true mesirus nefesh is exceedingly difficult. It involves total renunciation of self; sacrificing to G-d one*s very soul and being. It is a . level of dedication to G-d that transcends all bounds of logic and emotion.
Even offering one*s life for G-d is not conclusive proof of true mesirus nefesh, inasmuch as the person may be doing so

Only when the act transcends all human bounds of logic, emotion, possible rewards, etc., is it deemed true mesirus nefesh.
This level of mesirus nefesh was first palpably revealed by Avraham at the time of the Akeidah. There was absolutely no rhyme nor reason for Avraham to offer his son other than the fact that G-d asked him to do so; no possible personal benefit could accrue to him from this act.
The Gemara*s answer: . . so that it not be said: The earlier tests were meaningless*, *' will be understood accordingly:
Had Avraham not withstood the tenth and final test of the Akeidah it could well be said that his previous successes were a result of the fact that withstanding them made spiritual sense to him.
We would still not know how Avraham would respond to a test that required absolute and total mesirus nefesh.
By rising to the.challenge of the Akeidah. Avraham not only proved that he was capable of absolute mesirus nefesh, but he also proved that this spirit of total self-abnegation had permeated him when he withstood the earlier tests as well.
The ability to serve G-d with true mesirus_ nefesh was bequeathed by Avraham to every Jew. Even when a Jew's self-sacrifice may seem to stem from external factors, it contains the same degree of self-nullifaction to G-d which Avraham displayed at the Akeidah.
