liloi'th Americans w perished honored in Israel
On Sept, 15 at 4 p.m. the Association of Americans and Canadians in Israel held its annual memorial service for the more than 160 men and women who have died in the defence of Israel
All were North American olim, or their children, whose names are inscribed on a tablet in the AACI. Memorial Forest near Sha^ar Hagai.
This year six new ndmes were added to the memorial tablet. Rabbi David Hartman of Jerusalem said at the service^ that aliyah from North
America was an aliyah of choice and hbpe: Choice, because olim from North America come from free choice. Hope, because, "We proclaim our hop^ for what Israel can become, in spite of any and all tragedy. We say to world Jewry, 'Israel is a place you can come to live'.''
North American olim have served in every war in Israel's history and have willingly given their lives defending the Jewish State, said ACCI national president. Marc Leverithal.
Nazis revealed at hearing
Jacob Luitjens' connections with the odious Dutch Nazi" party (called the WA) were bared last week during his extradition hearing in Van- ■ couver. v ,' ' - The denaturalization hearing for the 69-year-old retired UBC professor marks the first time Canada has begun legal , ^proceedings against a convicted Nazi collaborator.
Luitjens was tried and convicted in 1948 by a Dutch court and given a life sentence, for his actions during the Nazi occupation of the Nether-' lands.
Ottawa is now trying to strip him of his Canadian citizenship, arguing he gave misleading information to immigration when he entered this country. • " . ,
Last week the Federal Court learned that Luitjens' sister, who testified against him'in 1985, was unwilling to give .evidence a second time.
Crown lawyer Bill Hobsoh said Canada has~no jurisdiction to subpoena the sister, who uiider Dutch law was never obligated to testify against another family member.
Judge Justice Frank Collier, presented with the previous testimony, said that entering the evidence as testimony, would be unfair
because there's no opportunity for the respondent's lawyer to cross-exaniine.
Luitjens admitted in a court document he was a member of the WA in 1941. The group was the first para-military force of the National Socialist movement to collaborate with Germans when they invaded Holland.
According to Harvard professor Louis De Jong, the WA helped deport Jews to death camps. "Some 107,000 Jews were deported- from the Netherlands to extermination and concentration camps of whom after the war only 5,200 were able to return."

Winni-
peg's Jewish community is aging, diminishing and moving to the South End of the city, according to a report prepared by Touche Ross—Management Consultants for the Winnipeg^ Jewish Community Council's long-range planning committee.
The report indicates that the Jewish population of Winnipeg, once known as "Yerushalayim B'Canada," has continued the decline that began in the 1960s, though population loss has slowed down, compared * \yith the period between the 1971 and 1981 censuses.
For 40 years Winnipeg's Jewish population was stationary, with a population in the neighborhood of 20,000. The peak year was 1961. The population now stands at just under 14,500, with 27 percent over 65. This compares with 23 percent in the 1981 census.
