Noted personalities spealc at Showcase
Federation delegates attend Assembly
Twelve Vancouver delegates will attend the upcoming Council of Jewish Federations General Assembly Nov. 16-20 in New Orleans.
The 12 ■ will take part in activities and Vancouver's Young Leadership honorees will be given awards along with 200 others from across North America. They are Renee Bellas and Larry Ros-soff. Others attending will be Rabbi'Martin Cohen, Robert Coleman, Helen Coleman, -Steven Drysdale, Eli Corn, Sharon Harowitz,Debby "Lerner, Carol Oreck, Bev Rossoff and Randy Tischler.
Mario M. Cuomo, Governor of the State of New York, will be another featured speaker. He will discuss the issue of "Responsibility and Service: A National Perspective" as part of the overall general assembly theme of Areyvim Zeh Lazeh: Responsibility and Service — Federation's Role in Creating a Caring Community.

Workshop topics will include timely issues such as long term health care insurance for the elderly, increasing tourism to Israel, AIDS in the Jewish community, and domestic violence, as _.well as the ongoing Federation concerns of human resources, leadership development, endowments, campaign, missions, refugee resettlement, Black-Jewish re-latibns and Federation-synagogue relations.
Two noted personalities will be featured at the upcoming Showcase of Canadian Writers slated at the JCC Nov. 20-21.
When Rabbi MeirUri Got-tesman presides over story-time on Sunday, Nov. 20 at 10:30 a.m.v he will-be giving children (ages 6 to 12) a chance to__be creative — a chance to develop "a sense of not what the world is, but of what it could be," organizers told JWB.
Following storytime. Rabbi Gottesman will speak to adults on "The Power of the Story" at 11 a.m. while Ellen Schwartz holds a creative writing workshop forchildren ages6to I2(yjr5, Nov.3).

Chabad Lubavitch hosts events featuring Rabbi Gottesman, and will hold a community Shabbaton with the rabbi as guest speaker on Fri-da5^_Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. at the Lubavitch centre (^nervations, 266-1313).
On Monday, Nov. 17, as a Showcase special event, the Jewish Educators Conference luncheon will welcome Batia Bettman, speaking on "People of the Book . . . But Which Book?". Bettman is director of -educational services for the Jewish^-Educational Council of Montreal, and has an MA. in educational technology.
Also during Showcase the book sale continues throughout — all day Sunday, Nov. 20,9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Monday, Nov. 21,9 a.m. to 10 p.m.

UBC Workshop will keep Medieval education alive

The upcoming Workshop on Education in Medieval Jewish Society slated Thursday and Friday Nov. 17-18 at UBC is to keep alive this most interesting and important subject, organizer Prof. Richard Menkis told JWB.
Prof. Menkis of the UBC department of religious studies explained that the introductory lecture in the UBC XVIII Medieval Workshop will take the form of a memorial to Frank (Ephraim) Tal-mage who passed away in July.

in the field of Medieval Jewish exigesis. One of his most famous works titled David Kimche: A Man and His Commentaries (1975) is a seminal,work in the field. He also had a great interest in Judeo Christian relations and published a reader entitled Disputation and Dialogue: Readings in the Christian?!Jewish Encounter {K.TAW and ADL, 1975) as well as numerous other articles and books in English and Hebrew.
"He was a teacher and friend of many scholars
attending the conference," said Menkis.
The first session — curriculum — will begin with a study of the Bible in Ashkenazi Jewry, abstract of a talk proposed by Talmage. Other sessions will include mysticism and education in curriculum, "under-explored issues in education in Jewish society and social aspects of education."
The final and . keynote -address — the Leon and Thea Koerner Memorial lecture —
Ta-Shma, professor in the Hebrew university of Jerusalem's department of Talmud. Chaired by A. Jean Elder, chair, committee for Medieval studies, it will take place at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 18 on the UBC campus, Buchanan A 106.

Commencing Saturday night, Nov: 19 until Monday afternoon, Nov. 21, Jewish educators from the Pacific Northwest region will participate, in a conference sponsored by G H EG being held in Vancouver.
Prof. Israel Ta'Shma will deliver the keynote address, "The People, Their Book and Their Language — The Hebrew Book of Life and. Education," at 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19th at the Schara Tzedeck synagogue. This evening is offered in conjunction with the Jewish Federa-tion of Greater Vancouver.
The conference continues on Sunday morning at lOa.m. at the Talmud Torah. A wide variety of topics will be offered, including Torah L'ishma sessions with Prof. Richard Menkis from UBC and Dr. David Cordis from the University of Judaism, and language teaching with Barbara Gerber from VCC, Batia Bettman (Education Resource Centre, ^ontreal), and UBC Prof. Rita Watson.
Drama and media will be discussed^with Joan Cohen from Beth Tikvah and Debbie Butlerfrom the Jewish Education Council, Seattle. Teaching methodology workshops will be held with Bettman, Prof. Stanley Blank of UBC, Nurit Grossman (JNF, Montreal) and Rabbi Shmuel
Strauss (Schara Tzedeck).
Additionally there will be a special session for librarians with Prof. Barry Waifish from the U niversity of Toronto and another for principals with Prof. Sally Rogow from UBC discussing methods of integrating the special needs child.
Monday's sessions begin at 9 a.m. at Beth Israel. Presenters will include Bettman and Phyllis Solomon discussing such topics as "The Teacher as Decision Maker," methodology workshops both in English and Hebrew and an examination the Jewish child faces as a member of a minority ethnic group in this majority culture.
The conference will close on Monday at 12:30 p.m. when Batia Bettman will discuss the topic of "People of the Book" at the JCC presented in conjunction with the Showcase of Canadian Jewish Writers.
