ISRAEL - A FREE TRADE BRIDGE TO THE EEC
In the last decade Israel is the only country that signed two free trade" agreements — with the U.S. in 1984 and the longstanding agreement with the Common Market.
Since January 1 of this year the majority of Israel's exports to these areas have not been subject to any customs or tariffs, and by 1992 the few that still exist will be abolished completely.
Many Canadian companies are unable presently to compete on an equal basis in the EEC because of tariffs imposed by the European countries. For example:

A joint venture with an Israeli company would enable Canadian companies to sell their unfinished Canadian components to Israel duty free (as "imports for exports components") to be assembled or produced in Israel and sold to EEC countries competitively.
This will become very important for Canada in 1992, when customs gaps that still exist between the Common Market countries will be abolished completely, thus widening the gap for outsider companies.
In order to enjoy the free trade agreement, 35 percent of the value added must originate in Israel. Through a joint venture with an Israeli company, the Canadian company can enjoy two additional advantages:
A. The product can be shipped to African countries at much lower cost than shipping directly from Canada.
B. Manufacturers whose ventures will necessitate the import of raw materials from the Far East will save on transportation costs since Israel is located between the Pacific and Europe. Israel's free port of Eilat on the Red Sea, is linked by a short land bridge to Mediterranean ports.
Taking all these factors into account, a joint venture with Israel is a free trade bridge between the North American continent and Europe, an excellent link between East, West and South.

Volunteers needed for art exhibition

Jewish artist Claudine Pommier is one of several organizers of a large, three-venue art exhibition on racism, to be held here from Sept. 23 to Oct. 22. Volunteers are needed now to help with preparations.
"I need people willing to do some typing and phoning," Pommier told 7%^ Bulletin. "Basically, my problem is fund raising. People are needed to write letters and phone to follow up letters."
Nearer the time she will also need preparatory work including tasks relating to the catalog and mailing. People will also be required to set up the site and, during the month's exhibit, to act as guides for school tours at the
Roundhouse, the main venue.
Other exhibits will be held at the Vancouver East Cultural Centre and the Community Arts Council gallery.
So far Pommier only has eight volunteers, "and I need at least 25," she said.
A special attraction will be a closing party, where all volunteers are invited to a big event, involving artists and musicians.
As well as the art work, there will be poetry reading and a panel discussion on the topic of racism held during the month. "There will very likely be a large forum with well-known people and open discussions," she added.
Those who are able to volunteer their services, are encouraged to call Claudine Pommier at 263-2058.
BoltamkVs images are dark and troubling

MICHAEL AJZENSTADT
Christian Boltanski was born in Paris on September 6, 1944. This wasn't just an ordinary day — it was liberation day. And liberation and the period that preceded it have had a great influence on Boltanski the artist.
As the son of a Jewish father and a Christian mother Boltanski always felt different in the France of post World War II. Anti-Semitism was still present and it shaped the emergence of a major artist whose exhibition. Lessons of Darkness, is now on display at the Vancouver Art Gallery
until May 15. It must be seen by every member of our community.
Of the many themes that haunt us as we walk through the darkened rooms of this very well presented exhibition, the strongest by far is the contrast between the minuteness of the human being and the enormous destructive powers of its imagination.
Lessons of Darkness is a troubling, thought-provoking, and gripping exhibition that is not easy to observe. But not one member of the Jewish community can avoid this dark lesson. Because if we do, Boltanski's message will be lost.
Scientists stabilize pesticides
JERUSALEM
Scient-
ists at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem's Faculty of Agriculture in Rehovot have found a way to extend the effectiveness of pesticides which are unstable to light.
This is a boon to the use of some pesticides which, though safe and efficient, cannot be used in direct applications in the field because of their rapid deterioration in sunlight.
The new method for stabilizing pesticides is based on the
use of clays. By absorbing the pesticide on the surface of tiny clay particles, together with an adequate stabilizing organic chemical, the pesticide can be protected from the destructive effect of the sunlight.
Last year, the Hebrew University scientific team which developed the new method wDn the prize in plant protection research from the Fund for Promotion of Research and Development in Pest Control Materials.

context of a whole process that hopefully will come together to get us from where we are now to a final settlement," Hussein told State Department reporters. But he added, "Otherwise, the idea is out of context."
Administration sources have stressed that Hussein, Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak and other Arab leaders have been asked to keep an open mine until Israel devises a plan for holding elections. Shamir has made clear that elections would be held under Israeli auspices, and has rejected Mubarak's proposal that they be under United Nations supervision.
The PLO, on the other hand, would agree to a U.N.-supervised election, but not one "under the occupiers," PLO leader Yasir Arafat said in a recent television interview.
Speaking on the Public Broadcasting Service's Mac-Neil/ Lehrer Newshour, Arafat said the PLO would only agree to elections as a "pack-
age deal" containing a timetable for Israeli withdrawal.
Interviewed on April 18 in Tunis, Arafat also said the referendum should not elect negotiators, but rather leaders of a Palestinian state to be established in the Territories.
Palestinian activist Faisal al-Husseini, meanwhile, is said to have proposed an alternative plan for local elections during a recent Cairo visit.
According to reports from Cairo, the plan calls for elections under international supervision with the full cooperation of the PLO. The Israel Defense Force would withdraw troops from all but key strategic positions during the referendum.
Those elected would serve as local representatives to the Palestine National Council, which the Palestinians call their parliament in exile.
Leaders in the Territories reacted to the reported plan with mixed feelings, but it was not rejected outright. They are said to be wailing for a signal from the PLO on how it feels about the elections idea, iia
