Hear and there - Eminent Jewish theologian, philo-. sopher and historian Emil Fackenheim will keynote this year's Kristallnacht ceremony, Fackenheim, who now resides in Jerus-alem, lived though the PARTON notorious eve of the Nazi pogrom 51 years ago. He speaks here Nov. 7 . . . When Vancouver Sun columnist Nicole Parton recently spoke to Na'amat, she mentioned a "Jewish past." Queried by JWB reporter Ethan Minovitz, Parton revealed she was born in Brussels in 1946 and she's the daughter of Evelyn Bardach, a Jewish Belgian . . . Annual Barbecue of Shalom branch. Royal Canadian Legion is presently being planned for late July . . . You've less than a month left either to see Danzig '39 at the Vancouver museum (closing July 16) or to take it in a second time at a leisurely pace . . . We hear that accompanying this world class exhibit, there are some fabulous Judaica pieces for sale in the Museum Gift Shop . . . PS. Vancouver is the last stop on Danzig '39's travels. After this you'll have to go to New York to the Jewish Museum to see the collection . . . Arriving back in town last week from a trip to China were Dr. David and Lila Quastel and their two sons. Taking advantage of the fact that North American media will already be here this weekend for a Lethal Weapon II media junket (Warner), our mayven tells us Columbia is sending in its own When Harry Met Sally junket . . . That film opens here July 12 but you can look for two of our boys — director Rob Reiner and star Billy Crystal — in town over the weekend with star Meg Ryan... Reiner {Stand By Me, The Princess Bride) will doubtless meet up here with Lethal's producer Joel Silver and its director Richard Donner(both MOTs) and their stars Mel Gibson and Danny Glover (staying, we hear, in Shaughnessy).

Look who's coming to the West Coast . . . The recently retired editor of the Canadian Jewish News, Morris Lucow and his wife have bought a condo in Victoria where they take up residence at the end of the month. . . Stationed there in World War 11, Lucow also worked for the Victoria Colonist for a time and has always wanted to retire to the B.C. capital . . . After 50 years in the newspaper business, he'll still keep his hand in by covering B.C. (and later Alberta) for the CJN whose eastern-based readers want to know more about what's happening in Canada's third largest Jewish community . . . Lucow will be keeping in close touch with The Bulletin so we welcome an old colleague and old friends to the area . . . Bru-chim Habaim!

What happens when a group of 26 Israeli insurance people and family members tour B.C. by bus? Well, they just happen to get interviewed by Bill Hughes, host of CKNW's morning interview show The. Roving Mike . . . And this is how it was with an Israeli group whose insurance business members had won a trip to North America under an incentive plan.

As Hughes stepped on to the bus, the driver whispered, "I've never had so much fun in my life. This bunch is singing crazy!" . . . Hughes then launched into his interviews which were interspersed with raucous and exhuberant renditions of familiar (to us) Israeli folk songs, winding up with the contingent's heartfelt version of Yerushalayim Shel Zahav that brought a lump to the throat ... "It was a very moving moment for me," Hughes related . . . There were times, too, he pointed out when "If we'd been outside instead of on the bus, we'd have all been dancing!"

interview was that insurance payments in Israel have not been influenced because of the current unrest in the Administered Territories.
From our media mayven, some tidbits ... Actor Robert Davi (one of ours) who plays the villain in the new James Bond film License to Kill (opening July 14) will return here in July to continue his role as a mafioso on Wise Guy . . . And French heartthrob Gerard Depardieu {Return of Martin Guerre, 1900) is taking Hebrew lessons in preparation for his role as an Israeli musician in Green Card, directed by Peter Weir (Witness, Dead Poets Society)... So kids — don't complain about Hebrew school — you're in company with the stars . . .

THE GRADS
Eight Vancouverites were staying in dorm along with some 135 other family members at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. last weekend, attending a Grad Family Reunion from all over the world — Canada, the U.S., France, England, Israel, Argentina and Australia . . . Localites attending included. Irving and, Dorothy Grad, daughters Mimi Grad and Sue Floyd, and Sue's children, Derek and Rachel . . . Plus Sylvia (Grad) Powell and a Grad niece, Rhonda Man-dleman... The unusual event was organized by Dr. Eli Grad of Boston (former president of Brookline College) and in L.A. by Charles Grad and Marsha Burnam... Dr. Grad, who traced the family tree back to the illustrious Vilna Gaon, sends updates a few times a year to an impressive roster of 1,500 actual Grad relatives . . . Amazing!
In the mail: A letter from Martin Gilbert in London touchingly revealed his deep joy over the aliyah of many Refuseniks who were his personal friends and for whom he'd been campaigning— The Bulletin was honored to publish many of his articles on their behalf. . . Prof. Gilbert had hoped to be coming back to Vancouver this year but says he won't be able to make it.. . But he did mention that he has a new book coming out before the year is over, one which will be of interest to our community ... P.S. He didn't mention its title or subject matter, but we'll stay tuned ... P.P.S. In case Gilbert, of Oxford, isn't instantly familiar to anyone, he's the official biographer of Churchill, an internationally famous historian and he's an M.O.T. who's penned many important books about Soviet Jews and the Holocaust.

Recent visitors were Amos Ben-Gurion and his wife, Mary, in town on a private trip to see the Pacific Northwest and Banff areas ... They were hosted here by Sam and Sella Heller and others from the local cadre of Associates of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, which of course, is named after the visitors' illustrious father... It's of interest to note that Amos and Mary have always called themselves — Palestinians!... And a wry postscript is the story recounted here of Amos phoning the BGU office in Montreal where someone answered with brevity: "Ben-Gurion". To which Amos responded, equally succinct: "Ben-Gurion" . . . And heard the phone hung up in his ear!
Ay, yai, yai, have we got a Canada Day Bulletin for you! Next week you'll read another specialized Canada Day array of stories about localites who've made a wider mark in B.C. and Canada ... Look also for an interview with Barbara Frumand among others, the man who is the top AIDS researcher here, plus book reviews on Jewish Canadiana — and much more!

The hundreds of new Subscribers entering their first summer reading The Bulletin will not be familiar with the fact that for many decades we've been doing what all Jewish newspapers on the continent do — skipping two editions in July for staff recess... Of course, the other papers miss two consecutive editions which we don't — the Boss feels that publishing alternate weeks in July, rather than missing two consecutive issues, serves the community and our advertisers much better, though it's harder for us.

So if you're planning P.R. for your group, or handling ads for an account that will benefit from the highly specialized circulation of The Bulletin — you'll want to hang on to the JWB Summer Publishing Calendar on this page . . It'll be updated each edition now through July, but please consult it to plan your publicity needs — especially between July 5 and Aug. 3 (when regular week-in, week-out publication resumes) ...A Shaynim Dank!

Jewish museum wins 'Oscar'
AMSTERDAM — The
Jewish Historical Museum in Amsterdam has been awarded an "Oscar" and $5,000 as winner of the 1989 European Museum Prize.
The 57-year-old institution, which was looted by the Nazis during World War 11, is the first museum in the Netherlands ever to receive the prize, which was established by the Strasbourg-based Council of Europe.
. The museum was cited for the unique manner in which it presents Jewish culture as part of Dutch culture.
The "Oscar" is a statuette by the French artist Joan Miro. It was presented to the museum's director, Judith Belinfante, in Strasbourg.
leading to the expulsion of the Jews from Spain {JWB, June 15). The mission is entitled "From Expulsion to Redemption," and will focus on exploring the Jewish heritage in Spain and a visit to Israel.
Local Bonds executive director, Alex Kliner, told The Bulletin that noted businessman and community leader, Abe Gray, will lead the B.C. delegation to Spain and Israel. "The mission affords an excellent opportunity for Canadian Jews to commemorate a tragic chapter in Jewish history, and celebrate the rebirth of Israel," said Kliner.
Araf, a specialist in International Affairs and Middle East strategic studies, graduated from the Hatfield School of Business Administration in England with a B.A. in marketing and communications. He obtained his M.A. from the University of Lancaster at the U.K. School of International Affairs and Nuclear Strategy.
