His huge canvases ablaze with colour^ Daniel Frankel paints and repaints until he gets as many as five layers. The resulting abstracts and stylized figures haye ended up at a charity auction, at a shooting of 21 Jump Street, and on private sale for as much as $3,000 for a pair of paintings.
Not bad for the work of a 15-year-old.
"I think Pm going to stay with the "upper" colors, not depressing colors," proclaims Daniel, a West End resident who has led a hand-to-brush existence since he was five or six.
Daniel, who enters Grade 9 at King George Secondary school next month, acquired his interest in art from grandfather Heinz Seelig, a Berliner known for his pointillist illustrations in a Haggadah. Seelig moved to Israel, where Daniel was born.
"When I was young, I liked to watch him paint,*' Daniel recalls. "My grandfather let me pick up the brushes."
Though the two have widely divergent styles, Daniel says they appreciate each oth-
Avner lives up to his name
By GARY POGROW
Avner the Eccentric is more than his name. He is also brilliantly funny. A classic clown who is just as funny working some of the standard pratfalls as doing new routines. In fact, having seen his routine a few years ago at the Vancouver East Cultural Centre, it is still as funny today — the mark of a great talent.:,
Avner (Eisenberg) was one of the featured stars of this year's Comedy Festival at Granville Island and Yuk Yuks. Although he was unable to appear on opening night at the Waterfront theatre due to illness, he performed masterfully the second night.
He enters the stage a la Emmett Kelly, pushing a broom. He is silent and wears a red clown's nose. Things drop — his cigarettes, his matches, etc. — and through his struggle to figure things out logically, we are beside ourselves in laughter.
It is in that logic where things should be but are not, that we break up in laughter because "it" appears so real, so right, and yet so wrong.
In one routine Avner sits down to eat a gourmet meal. He lifts the tray covering the plate to reveal an entree of

serviettes. He then eats them with grace and farce. He puts some serviette over his face, making a mask, and proceeds to eat his face. When he is finished he pulls out a string of colored cloths from his mouth. Avner is one of a kind.

ent the outcome of any direct or indirect negotiations over the hostages that may take place.
Dr. Ariel Marari, a specialist on international terrorism at Tel Aviv University's Jaffee Centre for Strategic Studies, said in an Israel Radio program that the Hezbollah had in the past frequently announced its plans to execute hostages, but had up to now always withdrawn or postponed its threats.
He claimed that there was evidence that no hostage had actually been executed as threatened, even though four or five hostages had died, with their deaths announced as executions.
He said evidence had shown that all had died during torture, with one death due to an illness suffered by the hostage at the time of his abduction and made worse by his incarceration.
To cover up the torture aspect and increase the threat value, the deaths were announced by Hezbollah as deliberate executions.
This is believed to have been the case with U.S. Marine Lt. Col. William Hig-gins, who Israeli intelligence has said died under torture late last year.
Obeid's faction of Hezbollah, the Organization of the Oppressed on Earth, claimed it hanged Higgins on July 3 L.

modern papyri.
Another generation of the family, however, has given up artistic pursuits. "I had three kids, and I had to feed them," laughs father George, who grew up in New York. But Dad is still a patron of the arts; the Prospect Point Cafe, which he runs, and Bridges Restaurant, which he co-manages, shelter some of Daniel's canvases.
George has taken Daniel to New York's Museum of Modern Art, where the works of Pablo Picasso have inspired his son to take an abstract route. And when George helped build Bridges nine years ago, architect Richard Henriquez told him of Arts Umbrella, a school for children run by his wife, Carol. "I
foam for his works; a year later, he started the first of his "big paintings," shaped from acrylic in layers so thick that they seem to have a third dimension. And for his Bar Mitzvah, he designed his own invitation (a copy of which can be seen at Beth Israel).
Today, the young artist shows a flair for portraying women who are, to put it bluntly, nude. Not to worry, though: Picasso's straight lines and stylized forms have influenced Daniel sufficiently that his subjects don't show much anatomical detail.
Other themes in his estimated 30 to 50 canvases are a little less controversial, but full of fiery reds and yellows. In a corner of his apartment, some geometric figures are
Youth choirs hold auditions
JWB staff
For parents who find themselves stopping to listen when their children sing in the shower, the Jewish Community Centre will be holding auditions for golden-throated children who wish to join one of three Jewish Youth Choirs.
Auditions will be held Sunday, Aug. 27 from 10 a.m. to noon at the JCC. The training choir is aimed at youngsters between the ages of six and 8, the children's choir is for those nine to 12 years old and the seniors is for those between 13 and 18.
Rehearsals under Jan Cooper, a leading Canadian vocal coach, will begin Sept. 10.
According to organizer Reuben Braunstein the choirs offer children the opportunity
to learn about their heritage and make new friends through music. Studies will include both traditional and contemporary English and Hebrew repertoire. Travel may also be a possibility, he said.
Braunstein noted that a professional background is not required. What, is more important is a positive attitude.
For an audition appointment call Braunstein at 266-6652.

splashed on a black background. "I'm going to cover this one over and do a nice abstract," he asserts.
Though he uses space in the Prospect Point Cafe's basement for a studio, Daniel likes to paint at home. "I like the view here, but I need space!" he exclaims. "I can't go wild now, so I have big dropcloths thrown on the floor." Some blue-green spots on the rug attest to moments when his brushwork went a bit too far.
Sisters Dana, 16, and Alexandra, 7, are friendly critics. "My little sister used to touch my paintings, but she never messed them up," Daniel smiles. One of his pictures, an abstract which he named after Dana, hangs in the pub at Bridges: "She told me she liked it."
Sometimes juggling three paintings at once — wielding his brush on one canvas while the others dry — Daniel is considering taking fine arts in university and making brush-work his life's work. "I painted in Israel, and I would like to paint there again," he remarks.
To dream up more ideas to put on canvas, Daniel takes trips to local museums and consults art books. Will there ever be an end to what he can produce?
"There never is," says the youthful craftsman, who has filled about 30 books with sketches alone. "There's always something more I want to find out about."

there is no choice involved here.
Like the misplaced serendipity of Neville Chamberlain and Woodrow Wilson, we are now told Yasir Arafat loyes Jews, recognizes Israel and the way is open to the road to peace. This modern day Amalek doesn't hate Jews — only the Zionists. Perhaps in the name of peace and to save Jewish lives from the whims of terrorists we can divorce Zionism from the Jewish repertoire and, voila — all will be well and good in the world.
Zionism is not a luxury or the greed of "land grabbers." It is an eternal imperative of the Jewish faith. It is the promise G-d made to our father Abraham — a promise on which no Jew has the right to turn his back. In spite of the fact that for many centuries it was a near physical impossibility for a Jew to live in his land, there have always been those Jews who risked their very lives for that privilege. And those who have chosen, whether rightly or wrongly, to remain in exile have denied themselves something precious. The modern State of Israel came into being not because the Jew deserved it — but because the gentile did! A Jew in his homeland in the face of an astonished gentile world that had not witnessed this for two millenia, and were quite prepared to have let perish in the concentration camps!
Have we forgotten this dream? Can we honestly be content at this date, after all we have been through, to give up the ancient hope of our fathers "to be a free people in our own land"? But in the land of Israel there are forces at play that are far more powerful than any mortal ones. And G-d's promise to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob is being fulfilled with or without our help.
And, yes, the modern-day Amalek is no fool, for he has succeeded in dividing us. Even he knows that when a Jew stands up to his adversaries and serves his G-d in His land — no power on earth can defeat him.
