Sweet Charity racks up strikes for Israeli hospital
By DOROTHY GRAD
Twenty years ago, Fay Sears approached Blossom (Wine) Weiristein with an idea. "Let's form a bowling league and give part of the prize money to a hospital in Israel." A good idea.
Fay, Blossom and the late Abe Gurvin organized a Sunday night mixed 10-pin bowling league at Town 'N Country Bowl. Blossom had no problem finding a needy institution, Bikur Cholim hospital in Jerusalem.
Sweet Charity Bowling League is still alive and well. Forty-eight men and women of all ages bowl every Sunday at 8:30 p.m.
Each year Sweet Charity donates approximately $ 1,000 to the hospital. The 1988-89 season's donation was given in honor of Harry Weinstein's 86th birthday. Weinstein is still active in the league.
A recent letter to Weinstein from Yehuda Kinstlinger, Bikur Cholim hospital public relations director, noted in part: "We are pleased to inform you that the Sweet
Charity Bowling League, under the presidency of Irving Grad, he should live and be well, has contributed $1,000 to Jerusalem's central Bikur Cholim hospital in your honor.
"Last year 21,000 hospitalization days were counted in Bikur Cholim, 3,400 babies were delivered and 71,000 people were treated in our out-patient clinics.
"Donations are direct and practical aid of non-stop efforts to save lives of Jerusalem's sick and wounded."
Several new bowlers are needed for the 1989-90 season. Bowling starts Sunday, Sept. 10 and finishes Sunday, April 29. The closing banquet is already set for May 12.
Age is no barrier at Sweet Charity, there are several two generation families bowling, including couples and singles. To join the league call Irving Grad, president, 266-0049; Millie Weinstein, treasurer, 270-6258; Joyce Prazoff, vice-president, 273-5292; or Sue Grad Floyd, secretary, 584-8273.

on R *eh to do the . . good and righteous, "is the second recent reminder that we must keep both spirit and letter.
Concentrating on only one will cause the delicate balance to shift, and we could end up dangling dangerously. But by balancing the two, we can reach physical and spiritual heights.
This is the creative tension in J udaism, the unique focus which allows us to walkacross a high wire without fearing a tragic fall.

nationalist aspirations," he added.
One El-Hakawati play, T/ie Birds, written by an Arab from Nazareth and directed by Fuad Awad, uses metaphor to bring, about its message, he said. "It's about a hunter unidentified — who accuses his servant of sabotage and sends hirn to prison. The servant rebels and attacks the hunter... the symbolisni is clear."
Another tale, by Jean-Paiil Sartre, deals with the Nazi occupation in France. Though a parallel with the Israeli administration of the Territories is not stated in words, there is again a clear implication, said Abileah.
But Lubeck and her husband's theatre company continue their performances, not only around the world, but also in Israel. Will El-Hakawati keep disseminating its thinly-veiled messages?
"Israel is a free country," said Abileah. "Israel permits this."
